Crave Deal at Underground Dinner Tonight

by Steven Doyle

We just received an email from our favorite underground chef who was explaining he had a few last minute cancellations for his underground sushi dinner extravaganza that will be hosted “somewhere in Deep Ellum” tonight. Because he loves craveDFW so much he sent this beautiful offer:

I am offering $20 off to anyone that RSVP’s and mentions craveDFW today. Tonight’s menu is a 6-course tasting menu of fish caught yesterday in Hawaii and hitting the plates tonight in Dallas (about 27 hrs out of the water). This list includes: Kajiki, Hamachi, Walu, and Ahi. To RSVP for this $70/person(cash only) + gratuity dinner in Deep Ellum (and receive a $20 discount) email dat@chefdat.com.  Also the big bonus is that tonight’s dessert is being prepared by Katherine Clapner of Dude, Sweet Chocolate.

Remember, these dinners are BYOB, so that is an extra bonus for a great date tonight. We have been to a few of these DAT dinners and they are really special. And a Clapner dessert to boot? Go get ‘em!

Something New For ZaZa Sunday School Brunch

by Steven Doyle   photos by Robert Bostick

We have reported a few times on the really innovative Sunday Brunch at Hotel ZaZa in uptown that is always a blast for those not quite ready to stop the party for the weekend. As ZaZa and the Sunday Brunch continues each month Executive chef Dan Landsberg and chef de cuisine Bradford Hodgkins have been looking for ways to elevate not only the party but the cuisine being served.

We just caught up with the pair of chefs as they each returned from their summer vacation, looking tan and fit and ready to hunker down in the kitchen. The ZaZa kitchen wizards were eager to tell us about the new ideas they have for the wacky fun brunch that is like no other in Dallas.   Continue reading

Santa Barbara: Foodie Stroll with Wine Cask

by David Donalson

Santa Barbara is about 2 hour north drive along the 101 from Los Angeles. It is a beautiful city that has been called the “American Riviera” and with temperatures in the high 70s during July, it makes a great summer getaway. When visiting we thought the best way to explore this beautiful city was the foodie stroll with the Wine Cask restaurant. The Wine Cask is a Santa Barbara staple and set just off the main tourist street (State Street) on Anacapa, a great place to start a tour.

Our adventure starts on Tuesday, when the Santa Barbara Certified Farmer’s Market shuts down the State Street for a few hours so chefs, tourists and locals alike can shop from the different stands for local produce. For the foodie stroll, we walked with Chef Brandon Hughes while he made choices on what products he wants for the restaurant menu and our personal tasting menu later.    Continue reading

Genghis Khan: The Exhibition

by Crave Staff

An epic tale, the transformation of Temüjin – a poor, illiterate child – into Genghis Khan – one of history’s greatest conquers – is filled with brutality, cunning and intrigue. Born in 1162 AD, Genghis Khan’s early hardships included the untimely death of his father, the controversial execution of his half-brother, his imprisonment and torture at the hands of a warring tribe, the kidnapping of his young wife, Borte, and the violent and deadly rivalry between him and his sworn blood brother, Jamuka. These challenges shaped him into a brutal, yet visionary leader.

In 1206 AD he successfully united the Mongol clans and was given the title of Genghis Khan – Fierce or Oceanic Ruler. He solidified this unification by establishing a code of law or Yasa which brought order to the Mongolian steppes, and prepared his people to wage war with civilizations beyond Mongolian borders.  Continue reading

Anejo Ceviche Strikes Gold

by Steven Doyle

We had a chance to check out a tequila grotto in the Mid-Cities recently and had to report in that we really enjoyed the hospitality and cocktails at Anejo House of Tequila  in North Richland Hills. True to their name, Anejo stocks about as many premium brands of tequila as we have seen, and certainly the most in any suburban outpost.  Continue reading

Velvet Taco Scores a Win

by Steven Doyle

For months we all have been watching the little chicken shack on the corner of Henderson and Central, the gaping mouth of one of the busiest restaurant and bar streets currently in Dallas. What was once a Churches Chicken franchise has now been spiffed up into a taco behemoth that should satisfy most anyone on an all-taco diet. Of course we refer to Velvet Taco.

Velvet Taco is the brain child of long-time restaurateur Mark Brezinski (remember him from such restaurants as Tin Star, Pei Wei, and more recently Bistro Babusan) and the erudite group from Front Burner Restaurants who own Whiskey Cake, Red Dog Right, and the Ranch at Las Colinas.  Continue reading
