Pamplona’s San Fermin, An Unlikely Undiscovered Gem

by Adam Sachs

“At noon of Sunday, the 6th of July, the fiesta exploded.  There is no other way to describe it…It kept up day and night for seven days.  The dancing kept up, the drinking kept up, the noise went on.  The things that happened could only have happened during a fiesta.  Everything became quite unreal finally and it seemed as though nothing could have any consequences.”

-Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises

Little seems to have changed since Ernest Hemingway’s observations of San Fermín in early 1900s Pamplona, one of Spain’s oldest cities that boasts colorful winding stone streets and strings of bars that serve cheap local wine and delicious pintxos (tapas) displayed on the bar topSan Fermín gets much attention from its annual rituals of precarious bull runs, and the festivities evoke comparisons to Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day.   Continue reading

People’s Choice Winner For Best Sandwich

by Crave Staff

Looks like Cafeteria Y Loncheria El Padrino stepped up for another category win in our on-going People’s Choice Award for the almighty sandwich.  Running a close second was Jimmy’s Food Store with their myriad of flavor combinations – including the much ballyhooed spicy Italian sausage.

We congratulate El Padrino for their delicious tortas, the Mexican answer to the sandwich that is made with bolillo, the football-shaped savory bread, and a whole host of fillings.  Generally whatever the taqueria has on hand can make its way into the torta.  Also popular might be the Cuban that is made of ham and roasted pork, or the Milanese that is made with frittered beef.

Certainly the taqueria mainstays remain popular including Al Pastor (marinated pork), Carne Asada (marinated steak), and many other combinations.  Continue reading

Hunt For CFS: Raven’s Grille

by David Donalson

There is nothing more Texan than chicken fried steak. Everyone has their own personal favorites and it is a matter of personal pride. I have eaten more than my fair share as my waistline can attest to but there is a hidden gem in the Mid-cities area that may have my favorite, Raven’s Grille.

You may be asking where Raven’s Grille is hidden if it is as good as it looks (and it is)? Raven’s Grille is clubhouse restaurant of Texas Star golf course. Texas Star is an amazing course that may be the hardest course I have ever played in very limited experience. What could be better than waking up early and getting a round of golf in? Eating this chicken fried steak afterward.  Continue reading

Clos Pegase Wine Dinner at Second Floor

by David Donalson

This Tuesday, the Second Floor Bistro and Bar are going to be hosting one of my favorite wineries, Clos Pegase. Winemaker Richard Sowalsky and executive chef J Chastain will be working together for this 5 wine, 4 course meal. For my money, I always love it when there is more wine than food and for just $75, this is well worth the money. Just look at the menu:  Continue reading
