Researching the history the hot dog is murkier than the water some are boiled in, but there is certainly no mistake that the wiener on a bun is a quintessential staple of ball games, circuses, amusement parks, and just about anywhere people are looking for an inexpensive and easy to eat meal.
Dallas saw an insurgence of great hot dogs a few years back but they did not seem as sustainable as the almighty burger, and many fantastic dog locations shuttered.

Harwood Hospitality Group’s fourteenth concept, Tequila Social, will officially open its doors on Monday, July 24, in celebration of National Tequila Day – the third full-service restaurant on the Katy Trail in Dallas.Located on the ground floor of the 3100 McKinnon Building at 3100 McKinnon St, Suite G100, Dallas, TX 75201, Tequila Social seeks to bring a relaxed West Texas inspired concept to the area featuring Tex-Mex dishes, an extensive margarita and frozen drinks program, weekend brunch on both Saturday and Sunday and an expansive patio.
From the 1860s until the late 1930s, one of the primary amusements of both visitors and locals was the food and entertainment offered in the plazas of San Antonio by the Chili Queens.
These women served chili con carne and other Mexican American delicacies from dusk until dawn at various San Antonio plazas over the years — setting up tables and benches and bringing pots of food to cook or reheat over their flickering mesquite fires and to serve by the light of their oil lanterns. As morning came, their families helped them cart everything away. Wandering musicians and singers provided a festive air to the unique proceedings—unique, that is, outside Mexico. In Mexico, the open-air plaza restaurants were not celebrated for their charming food-servers. Only San Antonio had Chili Queens—and while they liked to joke, banter, and flirt with customers, they were well chaperoned by family members who guarded their virtue.
At first, only a few women — such as Sadie and Martha, sometimes pictured in old books about San Antonio — were called Chili Queens. Sadie was called “Anglo-Celtic;” Martha was Hispanic. The restaurant was imagined long before its opening, in late 1980s when Jim and Cindy Hughes were young newlyweds in Omaha, Nebraska a friend of theirs owned a restaurant that was closing called Bread Winners. Before the couple moved to Dallas they bought the name for $1.00 with the intent of someday opening their own location. The Hughes settled into their apartment in Uptown (way before it was known as “Uptown”) and noticed a restaurant called Verlaine’s on the corner of McKinney and Hall, whose quirky charm and proximity to downtown sparked their interest.
Verlaine’s was in the process of closing, so the Hughes purchased it, made some renovations, and opened for business on July 22, 1994. The Hughes family lived on the second floor of the Uptown location for the first several years with their young children before moving into a larger space and converting the second floor to office space. All four of their children and both sets of parents worked at the restaurant in some capacity over the last 28 years.
