Margarita Meltdown 2014 Announced For May 25

Margarita-31by Steven Doyle

Celebrity trainer, Jillian Michaels, recently said Dallas should stop drinking so many margaritas. She might as well tell us to stop breathing.

Originally just tequila and lime juice, the margarita dates back to 1924 and didn’t make its way to the United States until Cointreau introduced it in 1962. Dallasites have been making up for lost time ever since. Whether it’s the tried and true margarita, or a newly concocted variation, we’re inviting the best margaritologists to compete to find the best margarita in Dallas at the fourth annual Dallas Margarita Meltdown.   Continue reading

SPCA Pet of the Week

Lady 102602 SK2

If you’re looking for the perfect family pet, then look no further. Meet Lady and, just like her name implies, she is a lovely little lady. First of all, take a moment to admire her beauty. This 4-year-old Pit Bull mix has a gorgeous brindle coat, sparkling chocolate eyes, a pretty pink tongue ready to give kisses and a never-ending smile. Yes, she certainly makes it hard to say “no” to, but, then again, why would one ever want to say “no” to little ol’ Lady? She is a playful gal who enjoys running about, soaring after tennis balls, playing chase, and partaking in tug-of-war matches.   Continue reading

First Look: Toad in the Hole

DSC00908by Steven Doyle

Southern Comfort is no more. In fact, so is Ku Da Ta. Make way for the freshened up Toad in the Hole that is officially open for business located in Southern Comfort’s digs, and weeks before it was actually to open for business. Here you will find the magnificent bars inherited from its former self, but with a much more relaxed vibe. The crowd is as interesting as the cocktails being poured, and the food is reflects the name and has this amazing Brit flavor right down to the house-made HP sauce.

For the kitchen portion of Toad they brought in TK Culinary. For those not familiar, TK is Terry Kranz who has been operating hs own catering business for some years now after working or so long with Kent Rathbun. Kranz brought in another Rathbun alumni, chef Sean Frye who has developed a menu for Toad in the Hole that is fairly remarkable. Think Scotch Eggs wrapped in a made-from-scratch Cumberland sausage and drizzled with a roasted garlic aioli.      Continue reading

Standard Pour Is 2 Years Old!

standard3by Steven Doyle

It seems just like yesterday when Standard Pour opened its doors, and we all clamored in for a peek and a drink. The menu was shockingly good, and often you can find diners eagerly ordering fried chicken and a platter of delicious shishitos and edamame.  For the ladies, Wednesday night has become synonymous with a free three course dinneer. This week it surrounds rainbow trout and cheesecake. The place will be jammed packed.

More than anything, Standard Pour is a place for some of the best cocktails, with a full staff of talented barmen (and women), plus there are always amazing guest bartenders behind the stick.    Continue reading

dankby Alex “Moose” Perez

We have asked Moose Perez to join our elite fleet of craveDFW contributers. The Moose is a professional competitive eater who has downed plenty of wings, pizzas, and hot dogs, to mention a few items. Follow along a he sends us periodical reports on local and national competitions, plus an occasional article on his favorite restaurants. If you would like to create  a competition at your business, contact the Moose at craveDFW.

My first question when I first heard of this local food competition was “what in the heck is a DANK?” Upon reading about what it was all about, I knew this was something I wanted to share with our readers, and possible future eaters. Of course, I was deeply saddened knowing that under my contract restrictions, I would not be able to compete, but why not inform others of this feat.    Continue reading

New Girl Scout Cookie Sales Champ, Elizabeth Brinton

Katie Francisby Mark Shaeffer

If you haven’t bought any Girl Scout Cookies yet, you have only three more days to do so. If you already have, you probably bought them from 11-year-old Katie Francis in Oklahoma City. Katie has destroyed the record for most cookies sold, which stood for close to 30 years. The previous record of 18,000 boxes was set by Elizabeth Brinton, who actually has a Wikipedia page that is divided into “cookie years” and “later years.”   Continue reading
