First Look: Monta Ramen

IMG_1637by Timothy Pham

Yet another ramen location has open up recently in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The latest rendition to come to our fair city is Monta Ramen that originated from Las Vegas, NV. Their newest location is located in Richardson, in the Promenade North center. The menu is made up of six different flavoring of ramen ranging from the normal tonkotsu and miso to a spicy tonkotsu and kuro ramen. While there I ordered takana fried rice, some takoyaki, and the kuro ramen.

The wait staff told me that the takana fried rice would be a little salty due to the fact that takana is a pickled mustard leaf. Personally, I thought it was delicious and with the right amount of saltiness. The rice was soft and fluffy with just enough bite, and it was complimented with enough chashu pork to make this a meal in itself if not an appetizer to share. The takoyaki, a snack made with octopus chunks and batter was crispy on the outside, spongy and piping hot on the inside was a delight to eat. It was a typical flavoring of takoyaki sauce and Japanese mayonnaise, which isn’t to say that it was if anything normal.  Continue reading

First Look: Slurp Your Noodle at Wabi House

DSC08048by Steven Doyle

Wabi House was built on Wabi House chef-owner Dien Nguyen’s love for Japanese food and obsession for ramen, inspired by his foodie experiences and culinary training in major cities like NYC, Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle. For the past decade, Chef Nguyen has worked with Piranha Killer Sushi and currently holds the Corporate Head Chef position for Piranha Killer Sushi. He’s lead the opening of the new locations and oversees the seven Piranha locations in Texas.

Wabi comes from the word Wabi-Sabi. Wabi-Sabi is a Japanese world view embracing and accepting the beauty in the imperfection (Wabi) & the beauty that comes with age (Sabi). This Japanese view best describes what to expect of Chef Dien Nguyen’s restaurant location choice, concept and style of cooking.  Continue reading

Sakurai’s “Ten” Ramen Shop Opening Delayed Until January 2015

ramenby Steven Doyle

Teiichi Sakurai, owner of the illustrious Tei An in One Arts Plaza, has planned to open his tiny ramen shop in the new Sylvan|Thirty project in West Dallas for some time now. The 750 square foot restaurant will seat 13 guests, and will be designed by Hatsumi Kuzuu, the same talent behind such spots as FT33 in Dallas.

The restaurant, which will be called Ten, was on the fast track to already be open for business but was delayed due to a fire which gutted the new building back in March of this year. We now catch word that the delay will have diners waiting for Sakurai’s promised $10 bowl of ramen until January of 2015.    Continue reading
