The Rathskeller in Fredericksburg is Worth the Drive from Dallas

There is a particular kind of restaurant that Dallas doesn’t have enough of — the kind where the building itself is the first course. The Rathskeller in Fredericksburg is that restaurant. Fredericksburg sits about four hours southwest of Dallas in the Texas Hill Country, a small German-settled town of 12,000 people surrounded by vineyards, peach orchards, and limestone hills that turn gold in the afternoon light.

You walk down a flight of limestone steps off Main Street, duck through a low doorway, and find yourself in the basement of a building that was already old when Teddy Roosevelt was president. The walls are 1880s Hill Country limestone. The ceiling is low. The light is warm. The food is better than a room like this has any obligation to produce.

A Perfect Weekend on McKinney Historic Square

McKinney’s historic square is about 30 miles north of Dallas and worth every one of them. The buildings date to the 1800s, the shops are locally owned, and on a good weekend the whole thing hums in a way that’s hard to manufacture and easy to enjoy. Two days here goes fast.

Ninety minutes southwest, set in limestone hill country along the Paluxy River, it has dinosaur tracks in the riverbed, a wildlife park full of giraffes wandering loose, a historic square worth a walk, and a 60-year-old barbecue joint that is the real reason I keep going back.

Here is how to spend a weekend there with a tent.

The hotel rises directly from the water’s edge, offering a sense of retreat without sacrificing proximity to the city’s cultural core. Designed to reflect the River Walk’s blend of Old World charm and modern hospitality, the Westin pairs warm Texas materials with refined, contemporary interiors, creating a setting that feels both grounded and indulgent.
