We Celebrated National French Toast Day

by Steven Doyle

We celebrated National French Toast Day today by having a bite of the dish at the Original Pancake House, along with a few other favorites. The latest OPH opened recently in Addison, so we thought we would check out the new digs for one of our favorite breakfast spots.

In Spain they call this dish torriga, in the UK they refer to this as Poor Knights of Windsor, and in France they call French Toast pain perdu, or lost bread. Thought to come from more humble roots in a time where food waste was non-existent, old slices of bread were rejuvenated in an egg wash and fried to a crisp enjoyment, much like we would serve this today.   Continue reading →

First Look: Del Frisco Grille

by Steven Doyle

The highest grossing restaurant in the United States is the Del Frisco Double Eagle Steakhouse located in New York at Rockefeller Center, registering sales upwards to a staggering $36 million annually. For most that have visited one of the many finer steakhouses in Dallas or Fort Worth most assuredly has dined at Del Frisco. Now Del Frisco is offering a more casual surrounding in their latest concept Del Frisco Grille  that just opened on McKinney Avenue in the same building as Private Social, and occupies just over 8,000 square feet of space.

We were invited to the media opening of the Grille and had an opportunity to check out much of the menu. During our visit we spotted many familiar faces from the Del Frisco family, including chef David Holben and also the crew from Sullivan’s, all in to lend a hand in this opening.    Continue reading →

Get Your Holiday Tickets Early

by Steven Doyle

The holiday season is officially here and no amount of complaining will hold back the rush of pageantry, music and lights, so we all best accept the fact we need to get our shopping complete so we can sit back and enjoy with a cold mug of heavily spiked eggnog.

One thing you may wish to scratch off your holiday list are your theater plans for the season. Last minute hopes of grabbing a great seat to the nutcracker goes unrewarded, leaving the family restless and wanting.

We present your holiday music list below.  If you have additions for us, please direct them our way.  Continue reading →

World of Beer – Arlington Grand Opening

by Tait Lifto

Entering World of Beer in Arlington for the Facebook Soft Opening last night (tonight is the official Grand Opening) at 3:00pm, I was enthusiastically greeted by Bri Arroyo and handed two menus: a double-sided, laminated Draft Beer list and a 28 page book of beer that contains all the bottles and more.  Bri asked me a few questions about my beer tastes and then suggested a few of her personal favorites.  I selected a Gulden Draak, a Dark Belgian Triple weighing in at 10.5% abv.  After receiving my beer, I relaxed and really looked around.

World of Beer is an interesting concept, started about 5 years ago in Tampa, FL.  They have 16 locations in Florida and have recently begun branching out to other states hitting Columbus, OH and NC, and now Texas.  I sat down with one of the owners, Ryan Macina, to find out what the plans are for Dallas.      Continue reading →

Is Turkey Bowling Good Sport?

by Steven Doyle

Tonight is historically a big drinking night, and who could blame the single masses for trekking out the day before their annual family gathering that often can prove exacerbating. On the up-tick, you will also find other singles while sampling your favorite libation.

Also, while roaming the city you will see your share of activities such as Turkey Bowling. This is a ‘sport’ using a frozen turkey as a ball with the goal to knock over ten pins.

The game is quite popular with bars all competing for the late night Thanksgiving Eve crowd. The sport even has its own lingo such as setting a ‘fowl line’ and breaking a 7-10 spit fondly termed a ‘wishbone’.    Continue reading →

An Evening with Corey Taylor at Trees

by Christina Beard

When I saw this show announced, I was intrigued.  Corey Taylor, best known for his roles as the masked lead singer of heavy metal band Slipknot and front-man of the more radio-friendly Stone Sour, was coming to Dallas solo.  The show was billed as a spoken work, Q&A, acoustic show.  I was a little late to the show, so I did miss out on much of the Q&A.

However, I did catch one of the most important (from a metal fan’s perspective) questions: When is Slipknot coming back?  Continue reading →

Get Your Turkey Day Wines Now

by David Donalson

Wine during Thanksgiving can be a bit of a challenge because there are so many side dishes to go along with the turkey and ham. While there is not a single wine that can perfectly pair with your meal, I am going to give you some common and not so common pairings that might make your trip to your wine shop a little easier.

Most people look for Chardonnay to go with their Thanksgiving meal and it is a solid choice, especially if you are eating a smoked turkey. The buttery flavors of a good, oak-aged chardonnay really accent the smoke flavoring of the turkey as well as bring out more fruit flavors within the wine. Flowers Chardonnay ($41.69) would be an amazing match, while the Arbor Crest Connor Lee Vineyard Chardonnay ($14.99) and Sonoma-Cutrer Sonoma County ($20.92) would be lighter styles that would also be wonderful.   Continue reading →
