The First Thanksgiving Menu

by Steven Doyle

As our day of Thanksgiving fast approaches we wanted to look back and see why and how our Pilgrim ancestors celebrated their feast.

What began in 1620 with a band of 102 religious separatists seeking a new home and the lure of the New World’s prosperity, the Pilgrims settled into their new life style, which proved harsh throughout their first brutal Cape Cod winter.   Continue reading

Happy Chefsgiving: Olga and Raul Reyes

by Steven Doyle

Thanksgiving is upon us once again and all the gobblers are running for cover. To get you in the mood for a little fun and relaxation we asked a few chefs around Dallas several questions so we get our dinner cooked just right. We will run their answers both today and tomorrow, so check back often to see how your favorite chef weighs in on the holiday.

Olga and Raul Reyes operate Mesa Veracruz Coastal Cuisine, their family restaurant in Oak Cliff, and offer their holiday greetings. The restaurant is a beautiful oasis and offers authentic interior Mexican cuisine such as their beautiful house-made moles and fresh and bountiful seafood dishes. They are an adorable couple that offers simple hospitality in a world where the word often falls unnoticed.

When you go to Mesa next, ask Raul to play a tune for you on his guitar. He can make up a special song just for you and your family.

Read what the Reyes sent us this holiday season.    Continue reading

Anthony Van Camp is the Executive Chef at the new and very sexy steakhouse SER Steak+Spirits which is located atop the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. There the chef wunderkind performs in his very open kitchen gallery sending out amazing steaks and seafood items, along with some very special surprises. Did we mention he has a talented chef-wife?  Nicole Van Camp runs her not-so-secret underground chef business that never ceases to amaze as she brings a large bounty from local ranchers and growers.

If you still have not made holiday dinner plans, you can drop by his restaurant SER as they are not requiring reservations. Plus it’s the best view ion Dallas. Let’s look in on Van Camp’s advice for us this holiday. Continue reading

Happy Chefsgiving: Eric Shelton

by Steven Doyle

Thanksgiving is upon us once again and all the gobblers are running for cover. To get you in the mood for a little fun and relaxation we asked a few chefs around Dallas several questions so we get our dinner cooked just right. We ran some of these yesterday and have some fun chefs lined up for today, so check back often to see how your favorite chef weighs in on the holiday.

Eric Shelton is the chef-genius at M Dining and prepares all the pre-theater dining for the Dallas Summer Musicals. His shift goes well beyond matching dinner with musicals, although that seems to be a fun gig. He also hosts enormous catering events in Dallas and across the country. You may have seen Chef Shelton in fabulous kitchen such as the original Green Room (Marc Cassel era) and a stint at the Anatole’s Nana among others.

This Johnson and Wales grad is talented and there doesn’t seem to be enough love flowing for great chefs who labor in catering. Shelton has a beautiful, young family and has started his own holiday traditions.    Continue reading
