Sweet Mix, a new dessert shop, recently opened its first concept store at 1811 N. Greenville Avenue, Suite 300 in Richardson, Texas in the Eastside Richardson shopping complex. This is not your typical dessert shop that serves one specialty item like all of the “fro-yo” shops at every corner conceivable. Sweet Mix, a new dessert concept, mixes a unique blend of desserts incorporating fresh fruits and quality ingredients in its products. Continue reading

Congress and the Pizza Fracas
The Ketchup Advisory Board must have been working overtime during the Reagan administration when United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) pronounced ketchup a vegetable despite its saturation of high-fructose corn syrup. The proclamation was a victory for children everywhere, but the reality was much more dismal than the late night television poke for the obvious irony.
In 1982 Reagan was looking to cut billions from the budget, including a $27 billion slash in entitlement programs. A billion of those dollars that came from the school lunch program after it was crippled by allowing the condiment to water down the nation’s children’s health and nutrition. Continue reading

First Look: Pie Five
In a city with ever expanding pizza options, a long time home-town player is making their comeback in a large way. Initial glances at Dallas-based Pizza Inn may show they are losing the pizza battle, but instead they have re-entered the pizza market with a fresh concept called Pie Five.
The roughly 2,000 square foot Pie Five stores are half the size of their sister store, Pizza Inn. The idea is fairly simple and they have gone the way of such luminaries as fast food giants Subway and Chipotle as you build your own pie walking through a cafeteria-style line selecting your own ingredients. Regardless of the amount of ingredients the price of the single create-your-own 9 inch pizza is only $6.49. Continue reading

First Look: Mr. Mesero
Mico Rodirguez is back and blazing guns at his new restaurant, Mr. Mesero. The quaint former location of the ill-fated Burger Girl located at 4444 McKinney Avenue holds a dozen four-top tables with an additional communal table outside that seats about twelve people.
I stopped by Mesero today for a bite and found the food much different than I had imagined. There were some Tex Mex items, but the menu also had a Mex Mex aspect as well. Continue reading

Mike Shaw Mans the Kitchen at Zio Cecio
Yesterday we wrote about a visit to the new Italian restaurant Zio Cecio Cucina Italiana, and we shared a few photos of our meal and of the owner, Francesco Farris. What we failed to notice in all our photos was the chef in the kitchen, and we want to make this up to him now.
We are actually excited to see that chef Mike Shaw is taking care of duties in the back of the house. You perhaps know Shaw from York Street where he was chef-owner for many years before he and his ex-wife sold the restaurant to Sharon Hage. Continue reading

A Beautiful 3-Course Tasting at Bijoux
This past Monday we were invited to stop into Bijoux, owned by couple Scott and Gina Gottlich, and sample Monday evening 3-course dinner they are offering for the low cost of $39 per person. The special dinner includes an appetizer or salad, entrée and a dessert or cheese course, all to be selected from a specially prepared menu of seasonal ala carte choices.
It had been some time since we last stepped into the tiny French-inspired restaurant located on Lovers Lane just to the east of Rise No 1, the other French-inspired restaurant in North Dallas. As remembered, the restaurant is beautifully appointed and comfortable. Continue reading
