Holiday Vignettes: Jagger

by Steven Doyle

Until this past April Chris Jagger had spent the last 13 years on morning drive radio in the Dallas/Fort Worth area anchoring shows from 1998-2006 on 102.1 The Edge and then for the last 5 years on Live 105.3 and 105.3 The Fan.

During that time, from 1998-2003 he was also the television host for the nationally syndicated Warner Brothers produced TV show Change of Heart.

Since his radio contract ended in April, and for the first time in his 31 year career, Jagger has been enjoying plenty of free time as he anticipates his next career move. Another radio show is a possibility in the New Year and he has finalized plans for his restaurant/lounge concept that he hopes to find a location for in 2012.    Continue reading

Holiday Burlesque Tonight at Trees

by Courtney Crush

The holidays have long been cursed with the drudge of traditions that don’t always escalate the spirits. Let’s face it. “The Nutcracker” is several hours of yawn with an intermission fit for coffee zapped with a double shot in hopes of not interrupting the second act with snores from the mezzanine. A second act? It’s not over yet? Blech! That isn’t to say that occasionally a tear of nostalgia doesn’t spring to the mind’s eye every now and then.

Ballet is an exceptional art form of beauty and poise. Nonetheless, by the caffeine infused second act, my eyes have fuzzed over and I’m recreating the storyline with more drama and less clothes. A sprinkle of sugar and spice goes a long way to kindle enthusiasm. What if “The Nutcracker” was performed in the tradition of burlesque? Now that’s a show I could stay awake for.  Continue reading

Holiday Vignettes: Chef Andre Natera

by Steven Doyle

I first met chef Andre Natera  just days after he started working at the Fairmont Hotel Dallas almost two years ago. I could tell immediately that he had a much different agenda than any chef I had met before. His philosophy in helping the local restaurant community is like no other. He explained that he wanted chefs to band together and share ideas and cross train rising chefs, something that he does in his kitchen every day.   Continue reading

You may remember Hollie Dorethy from Season One of Master Chef. This local culinary beauty has had a busy 2011.  She has made many appearances on a whole host of Food Network programs, and is nearing completion of her very own cookbook, High Heels in the Kitchen.

Hollie has also won plenty of cooking comeptitions around town and nationwide, including her title of Stuffing Queen awarded by Emeril Lagasse on the Today Show.

Today we chat up Hollie to ferret out some of her Christmas traditions, Well, we really just wanted a chance to see her.    Continue reading

6 Holiday Beers for Dallas

by Tait Lifto

Seasonal Greetings to you, Dallas! I say “seasonal” because Christmas brings more than presents under the tree, it also means seasonal offerings from craft brewers around the world. I’m going to highlight a few holiday and winter beers for you in different formats: one is a very large bottle good for parties, two are great beers you can only get in a restaurant, and the other three are bottles small enough to enjoy yourself or give away as gifts.

The beers I’m choosing have different taste profiles but all help make you feel a bit nicer on a cold winter day. I’ve personally tried all of the beers listed here and had them right here in Dallas – if you need help finding one, place a comment and I’ll do my best to respond.                   Continue reading

Holiday Vignettes: Chef Richard Chamberlain

by Steven Doyle                 photo by Robert Bostick

For the next few days we will be running short holiday vignettes that include some of our favorite food people, not all necessarily chefs. Yesterday we sent out a list of questions with a holiday bent, some silly, some more serious, and asked the group to pick just a few to answer. The answers so far have been fun, and we are happy to share these with you.   Continue reading

Lunches at Private Social Are Serene

by Steven Doyle

I stopped in to have lunch with a few friends at Private Social, the beautiful restaurant on McKinney in Uptown run by chef-owner Tiffany Derry. She is going three months into her grand opening and exudes excitement, and for good reason. The restaurant is successful and she has met with rave reviews (Dallas Morning News gave it the four star treatment).

I have been to the restaurant many times since the opening, once for a press luncheon, a few dinners on my own, and often make this a stop when out cocktailing for an evening. Bar manager Rocco always has a few concoctions to share, and it is good to pop in for a light bite and a sip or two of whatever he dreams up that night. Now is a fantastic time while he is making his house-made egg nog for the holidays.   Continue reading
