Growing up 5 miles from the Mexican border, I like to think of myself as someone who knows and appreciates good Mexican food so when I got the call to cover the press dinner at the recently opened MesoMaya at Preston and Forest, I jumped at the chance. Any chance to taste Mexican food that is not from a chain, I am a go. So a quick jaunt over to Dallas to see what MesoMaya has to offer.
One of the more interesting features of MesoMaya is the indoor patio that has windows that can be raised to make the restaurant have an open feel. This will be wonderful when this weather finally breaks and fall begins and tonight was a good example of how open the restaurant could feel. After walking in, I was greeted with a very good strawberry serrano margarita. It was a sweet heat from the muddled fruits paired nicely with the tequila and lime. A great way to start a meal. North Texas’ only Advanced Saké Professional is teaming up with its most well-regarded Japanese chef to present a celebration of “Nihonshu no hi”, the annual opening of the saké brewing season in Japan.
On Sunday, Oct 2nd at 7pm, Hung Nguyen teaming up with Teiichi Sakurai and the Tei An staff to present a special dinner of authentic and progressive Japanese cuisine, paired with saké. The emphasis this year will be on saké from the Tohoku region, which was devastated by disasters earlier this year. The overall effect of those events on the quality and availability of Tohoku saké won’t be known until at least next year, so they will savor the 2011 brews while still able. Six years ago on a sun parched field at Lake Lewisville the inaugural World Tamale Eating Championship was held. Sponsored by Dallas Tortilla and Tamale Factory and the Old Town Lewisville Association, the event soon began to garner national media attention. The contest was moved to the Western Days Festival in Old Town Lewisville the following year.
Dallas Tortilla & Tamale Factory has organized and donated all of the tamales and labor for the last six years, working with the City of Lewisville and local media outlets to promote the event. Continue reading

Country music lovers will get to boot scoot once again as the popular 90s country club Denim & Diamonds is returning to the area with a grand opening this Friday night at 17727 Addison Road in the old Cape Buffalo location.
For the uptown crowd there is a lot of new life coming in the next few weeks with the soft opening of Avenu last Friday in the old Aura location and soon to be open Rumor Lounge & The Den in the old Liar’s Den location. Current hotspot Glass will also be opening a rooftop patio and naming it Revive for everyone to enjoy the view and also the same ownership group will be taking over Skye Bar and giving it a facelift and renaming it Red Lights.
