MFA Event & Texas Veggie State Fair

What’s better than one vegan charity event in Dallas? Two!

Mercy For Animal’s Executive Director, Nathan Runkle, will be in town to host MFA’s charity event on October 22^nd. From 7-10pm Sons of Hermann Hall (3414 Elm St., Dallas, TX) will be filled with vegans, vegetarians and animal lovers of all diets. The event will be a kick off for the Texas Veggie State Fair and raise funds to support the MFA efforts in the DFW area.

There are lots of great things going on at this event. The all vegan menu will be catered by your known favorite,

Spiral Diner, your yet to be known favorite to be, VSPOT Vegan Café, and the amazing Crosby Catering & Coffee. These three names alone should have you headed to buy your tickets. This is a great chance to get a sneak preview of some of the VSPOT menu items before they open and sample the veggie-liscious stylings of Chef Jeanette Prasifka (check out her Celebrity Chef demonstration at the Texas State Fair Tuesday October 18^th at 2:30). BubblyQ at the Ritz-Carlton

BubblyQ is a walk-around tasting and silent auction put on by Young Texans Against Cancer, a non-profit organization focused on raising funds for North Texas cancer research, a very noble cause we fully support and endorse. Held on the patio area in the Ritz-Carlton surrounded by Fearing’s restaurant, it was an enjoyable evening of dining, sipping and hob-nobbing with beautiful Dallasites.

We had several favorites with the food, led off by recently-resigned Scott Romano of Charlie Palmer and his rendition of rabbit agnolotti in parmesan broth with root vegetables. It was full of flavor, hearty and earthy and went well with Cotes du Rhone Village being poured at the bar. Continue reading →

Pie Judges Make Better Lovers

One of the best jobs going at the fair this year (besides the voice of Big Tex) is without a doubt that of the food judge. These are the people that come in each week to review the large variety of cakes, pies, candy and a whole host of categories.

Sure, there are a few oddball categories like Jello molds and Spam bake-offs, but without a doubt happy are the ones judging the pies. Continue reading →

Barn Aid 2011

Zombie Walk Dallas: Bound By Blood

Gloria Collell and Ferrer Wine Estates Collection

What is Cava and why should we drink it? Cava is sparkling wine done in the traditional champagne method in Spain. In order to not have thousands of French lawyers from Champagne climbing down their throats, they call it Cava and it is delicious. Typically Cava is a bit lighter and brighter in style than your traditional champagne at a fraction of the cost. Many a good Cava can be found for less than $20, something impossible to do with champagne.

At a recent evening tasting, I sampled some of the better collections from the Heredad Collection that I just had to share.

The event was a meet and greet with Gloria Collell, winemaker’s ambassador for the Ferrer Wine Estates. After working a full day, I was happy to grab a glass of the Segura Viudas Brut Rose. Heavy for a Cava, with some good mineral and red fruit notes that were clean and refreshing. Perfect for sitting around and talking to other writers and wine people about the weather, the economy and the world of wine. This led to the introduction of Gloria Collell. Continue reading →

Fairmont Dallas Announces New Artist in Residence

The Fairmont Dallas announced its fourth Artist in Residence for 2011, Ginger Geyer. Geyer, an Austin-based sculptor working with porcelain and mosaic, will contribute a special piece to The Fairmont Dallas’ permanent collection at the conclusion of her residency.

“We are very excited to have Ms. Geyer as our new Artist in Residence,” said Nicole Considine, Director of Sales & Marketing of The Fairmont Dallas. “Her unique pieces each tell a wonderful story, and we cannot wait to share her artistic vision with our guests.” Continue reading →
