Vegan Girl Goes to the Veggie Fair
by Melissa Brenner photos by Suzi Migdol
If you missed the Texas Veggie State Fair, you were one of the few. The last day of the Texas State Fair was set as the day for promoting fun, food and frolicking without animal products of any kind.
The threat of rain and mud did not stop the swarm of attendees. This, the second annual Texas Veggie State Fair, drew a much larger crowd than last year. The 1500 raffle wristbands were gone before the event was half over, leading organizers to believe between 2000-3000 attended the event. Continue reading

Dallas Tomato Battle
Back in the 1980’s there was an epic food fight between Colorado and Texas in Twin Lakes, Colorado 140 miles southwest of Denver as a way to vent about Texans vacationing in Colorado. The weapons were truckloads of rotten tomatoes.
The battle grew each year, bringing tourists in much like the Spanish La Tomatina festival in Bunol. The fun was eventually stopped in the early 90’s when the insurance premium rocketed. Continue reading

Salum at Beard House Friday
You will not find Abraham Salum anywhere in Dallas this week, but you can spot the chef-owner of namesake Salum and Komali in New York City as he begins preparation for his James Beard House dinner he will serve Friday evening.
It is considered one of a chef’s highest honors to pull duty at the residence of James Beard in the culinary world. Julia Child once summed Beard up as “ the quintessential American cook. Well-educated and well-traveled during his eighty-two years, he was familiar with many cuisines but he remained fundamentally American. He was a big man, over six feet tall, with a big belly, and huge hands. An endearing and always lively teacher, he loved people, loved his work, loved gossip, loved to eat, loved a good time.” Continue reading

Chefs Without Borders
What could be more exciting than spending a romantic weekend in Cabo San Lucas with Chef Kent Rathbun? OK, I should probably clarify. Rathbun will be there, but not for the romantic part. Unless you consider savoring his tasty morsels an act of seduction. (Nobody’s here to judge.)
Last week, diners got a preview of a chef-swap partnership between Rathbun and Chef Marco Bustamante from Capella Pedregal one of the most luxurious resorts in all of Mexico. Together, the chefs prepared an incredible five-course dinner filled with amazing flavors like “Crema de Elote” (cream of corn) with Peekytoe crab. Continue reading
