World of Beer – Arlington Grand Opening

by Tait Lifto

Entering World of Beer in Arlington for the Facebook Soft Opening last night (tonight is the official Grand Opening) at 3:00pm, I was enthusiastically greeted by Bri Arroyo and handed two menus: a double-sided, laminated Draft Beer list and a 28 page book of beer that contains all the bottles and more.  Bri asked me a few questions about my beer tastes and then suggested a few of her personal favorites.  I selected a Gulden Draak, a Dark Belgian Triple weighing in at 10.5% abv.  After receiving my beer, I relaxed and really looked around.

World of Beer is an interesting concept, started about 5 years ago in Tampa, FL.  They have 16 locations in Florida and have recently begun branching out to other states hitting Columbus, OH and NC, and now Texas.  I sat down with one of the owners, Ryan Macina, to find out what the plans are for Dallas.      Continue reading

Get Your Turkey Day Wines Now

by David Donalson

Wine during Thanksgiving can be a bit of a challenge because there are so many side dishes to go along with the turkey and ham. While there is not a single wine that can perfectly pair with your meal, I am going to give you some common and not so common pairings that might make your trip to your wine shop a little easier.

Most people look for Chardonnay to go with their Thanksgiving meal and it is a solid choice, especially if you are eating a smoked turkey. The buttery flavors of a good, oak-aged chardonnay really accent the smoke flavoring of the turkey as well as bring out more fruit flavors within the wine. Flowers Chardonnay ($41.69) would be an amazing match, while the Arbor Crest Connor Lee Vineyard Chardonnay ($14.99) and Sonoma-Cutrer Sonoma County ($20.92) would be lighter styles that would also be wonderful.   Continue reading

First Look: Pie Five

by Steven Doyle

In a city with ever expanding pizza options, a long time home-town player is making their comeback in a large way. Initial glances at Dallas-based Pizza Inn may show they are losing the pizza battle, but instead they have re-entered the pizza market with a fresh concept called Pie Five.

The roughly 2,000 square foot Pie Five stores are half the size of their sister store, Pizza Inn. The idea is fairly simple and they have gone the way of such luminaries as fast food giants Subway and Chipotle as you build your own pie walking through a cafeteria-style line selecting your own ingredients. Regardless of the amount of ingredients the price of the single create-your-own 9 inch pizza is only $6.49.           Continue reading

Happiness is a Warm CFS at Cowtown Diner

by Steven Doyle

Happiness is contagious. All week and continuing through until Monday, January 16, 2012,  Cowtown Diner in Fort Worth’s Sundance Square is asking diners to spread the love and share something good that has happened. More happiness follows, as 10 percent of the diner’s check also goes to work for others as a donation to Tarrant Area Food Bank.

Guests simply write down anything good or positive in their lives – whatever they are grateful for – and the message is posted on a wall in Cowtown Diner for everyone to share the warm fuzzies.   Continue reading

Laphroaig Visits Lonesome Dove

by Steven Doyle

Last night we were invited to an event in Fort Worth at Lonesome Dove located in the historic Stockyards. The celebration was for the Friends of Laphroaig, a group dedicated to a special scotch whisky hailing from Loch Laphroaig on the south coast of the Isle of Islay in Scotland.

The evening started off as most scotch tastings might, a dram of their 10-year old was passed freely in the crowd and a lot of back and forth with devotees of the brand with the master ambassador, Simon Brooking and distiller John Campbell. Both gentlemen were proud of the whiskys and spoke freely about the process of creating a cask.   Continue reading
