Rising To The Surfacetension

Rising Gallery presents Surfacetension on Friday, an evolution revealed by Bonny Leibowitz…

These evocative new works, which seem to break open allow the viewer to see deeper into an interior life through precise hints of light, powerful depth of color and variant physical surfaces which speak to a timeless energy. Many of these pieces incorporate encaustic wax, oil pigment and elements such as silk and twine. Photographic elements used in bold new ways, including a collaborative piece with Dallas photographer, Dylan Hollingsworth challenge and intrigue in conceptually and visually dynamic ways as trees, oceans and figures seem to float and rush into being.

Genghis Khan: The Exhibition

by Crave Staff

An epic tale, the transformation of Temüjin – a poor, illiterate child – into Genghis Khan – one of history’s greatest conquers – is filled with brutality, cunning and intrigue. Born in 1162 AD, Genghis Khan’s early hardships included the untimely death of his father, the controversial execution of his half-brother, his imprisonment and torture at the hands of a warring tribe, the kidnapping of his young wife, Borte, and the violent and deadly rivalry between him and his sworn blood brother, Jamuka. These challenges shaped him into a brutal, yet visionary leader.

In 1206 AD he successfully united the Mongol clans and was given the title of Genghis Khan – Fierce or Oceanic Ruler. He solidified this unification by establishing a code of law or Yasa which brought order to the Mongolian steppes, and prepared his people to wage war with civilizations beyond Mongolian borders.  Continue reading

Are You Gilty, Dallas?

by Steven Doyle

Last night I attended the kick-off party for Gilt City Dallas, the steroid version of Groupon that entices its users with promises of exclusive menus prepared by top chefs, tickets to sold-out shows, and A-list pampering at luxury salons — all at mega discounts.

Although I didn’t get any new information from Gilt about the new Dallas venture last evening, I will be hunting down more details in the coming week that should prove beneficial to craveDFW readers.  Continue reading

Wonder Years: New work by the SourGrapes

by Crave Staff

The Sourgrapes13 are a well respected graffiti art collective based here in Dallas. They learned their art form on the streets, in the dark, with the adrenaline of being caught for vandalism. It started as lines on pages, then wall murals with full perspective and finally brought to the canvas in a more controlled fine art environment. What comes from this evolution are well executed works of art that continue to tell the stories of their lives and influences. Join RISING Gallery in celebrating this art form at WONDER YEARS.
