Wachu Tacobot Willis? Velvet Taco

by Danielle Leahy    photos by Jacque Manaugh

Look at these pictures. Just look at them. They say a picture is worth a thousands words but in the case of Velvet Taco only 6 are needed:  Best.Gourmet.Tacos.In.Dallas.Period.

Velvet Taco has only been open a few short weeks in Dallas, located in the old Church’s Chicken on Henderson and 75 but is already making major waves in Dallas’ emerging Gourmet Taco scene. With over 20 different tacos on the menu broken down in to 6 categories (chicken, veggie, pork, beef, fish, and egg) and an emphasis on fresh, local produce these tacos are have been hand crafted from the tortilla up. In fact, all of the tortillas at Velvet Taco are hand made in house.     Continue reading

Dual First Looks: Dough and Mesa Maya Part 2

by Steven Doyle

We always look forward to an up-tick on the average Mexican cuisine in Dallas as often we can be complacent with what should be one of our finer cuisines. Meso Maya fits that bill nicely.

Part two of our dual restaurant first-look party finds us at Mesa Maya that opened in unison yesterday with Dough in the Preston Forest Shopping Center where the former CHIC From Barcelona was located. We were just off the heels of a stint at the newly opened and fresh-faced Dough when we recalled the another opening set for the same day. We moseyed on over for a look see.   Continue reading

Whachu Tacobot Willis? Tortas La Hechizera

by Danielle Leahy   photos by Jacque Manaugh

Tortas La Hechizera on Maple is the kind of undiscovered gem that makes true “Street Taco” believers out of people. Located on Maple at Inwood this small building hides a delightfully cheery and open interior, despite it’s “hole in the wall” facade. The sparkling clean dining room and mouth watering professional photos of the food on display are more reminiscent of modern day fast food chain than your typical taco stand.

The menu at La Herchizera is vast. They have tacos, tortas, tostados, huaraches, tlacoyos, and pambazos just to name a few. With over 12 meats to choose from ranging from hotdog to cow hoof there is not much you CAN’T get at La Herchizera. The tacos we ordered were of good size, hearty on the meat, with a huge pile of cilantro and onions on the side.   Continue reading

Free Menu Preview Tonight at Jorges

by John Stuchly

For a restaurant with over 50 years of history to try and reinvent itself is a daunting task, but that is what Jorge’s Tex-Mex Cafe is attempting. Located at One Arts Plaza in the heart of downtown Dallas, a desire to cater to the arts crowd is natural. To better serve a clientele interested in a nouveau take on the traditional Tex-Mex fare, owner Michele Mireles has encouraged her staff to create new dishes and drinks that reflect a 21st century sensibility, while still remaining true to their roots. So come along on a tasting journey 50 years in the making.

The Jorge’s family of restaurants were founded in 1957 in west Texas, and have since spread to five locations in as many cities. Although family run, each owner creates their own vision for their restaurants, with the promise of maintaining the quality and traditions upon which the brand is built.  Continue reading

A Tale of Tacos, BBQ & Beer

by Steven Doyle

A friend of mine who is working on his first entry into the restaurant world called me up to chat about his concept and asked if I was interested in grabbing a few tacos. I am always up for tacos and was curious as to which he would choose, especially since we will be examining tacos with our People’s Choice Award all week long.

Seems the friend was reading Cheap Bastard over at the Observer written by James Beard nominated Alice Laussade and admitted he read her religiously. Earlier this week Miss Bastard did a write up on an Oak Cliff taqueria called Cool & Hot off Eighth Street and I-35 in a converted Gulf station, and in her story she insisted my friend check the place out. I admit, I was a bit curious as well. I thought I had hit most taco stands in Dallas but this one escaped me somehow.  Continue reading

Hidden Taco Gem Found

by Bryan Coonrod

While roaming around The Harbor in Rockwall last Thursday during the concert series at the lake I started to get a little hungry but with so many people out there the sit down restaurants were pretty full. As I started to see if there were any street vendors there I came across a small taco stand called Tacos Del Potrillo a side business from it’s main restaurant called El Potrillo De La Sandia located on the North side of The Harbor by the large fountain. Cinco de Mayo Party Planner

by Crave Staff

We were just reminded that Cinco de Mayo is just days away and we haven’t prepared any piñatas of our favorite food critics, but we do know of a few cool places to celebrate.  If we think of any more we will add to the list later in the week.  Continue reading
