Restaurant Week: Trulucks

by David Donalson

Restaurant Week has a special place in my heart. For many of us, this is our opportunity to experience some of the finer establishments in DFW and support great causes in both the North Texas Food Bank and Lena Pope Home. It was through Restaurant Week that I discovered Pappa Bros. Steak House and Chamberlain’s Fish Market Grill, places I had wanted to go to but did not ever get around to going to. This year, my wife and I decided to focus on places we have not been to yet but thought might be worth a visit, hence a quick drive over to Southlake to try out Trulucks.

Walking in, you are immediately greeted with dark wood and white tablecloths. On the left was the wine cellar, a clear glass room with wine stacked high, and on the center and right were the main tables for the restaurant. We were quickly seated along a window overlooking the Southlake Town Center and with a clear view of the other guests, some of whom were more cozy than I would have preferred (seriously, making out between courses is for 16 year olds, not 30 somethings!). We asked for the Restaurant Week menu with wine pairings and away we go.  Continue reading

People’s Choice Award: Sushi

by Steven Doyle

As the summer winds down we have but a few People’s Choice Awards left to pass out. These brilliantly constructed plaques will be hitting the streets and off to their shiny destinations once we complete the awards series.

The heat has subsided from its 100+ degree temperatures but it is still warm enough to keep most people indoors. Why not beat the heat by enjoying this weeks subject for the ward — sushi.   Continue reading

Eddie V’s Restaurant Week Sneak Preview

by Steven Doyle

Restaurant week is fast closing in on the DFW area so we decided to check out a smattering of menus and do some pre-Restaurant Week reconnaissance. Our first look is at Eddie V’s who recently celebrated their first anniversary in Dallas.

When we visited Eddie V’s recently we found a thriving lounge scene in the front of the restaurant. Dark with a retro atmosphere that harkened back to days when you might find cigars if the laws weren’t so restrictive. The musical act that night played dreamy tunes from the classic American songbook, something difficult to find in Dallas. Continue reading

People’s Choice Award: Seafood

by Steven Doyle

This weeks People’s Choice Award finds us looking for something a bit fishy.  Where do you run for your seafood fix?  Be it a fried filet of catfish, tender halibut, or the very best in crab cakes.  The best location might include all these things and more.

So tell us where to get the freshest oysters, largest lobsters or crunchy and sweet shrimp cocktail.   Crawfish boil, lobster bakes, bounty of mussels and mountains of crab awaits your approval.

What is your favorite seafood haunt? It’s up to you to choose Dallas Fort-Worth. We ask for these awards that you limit your votes to those that are primarily in the category we choose.

Will Fish for Food at Hook, Line and Sinker

by James McFaddin

There is a saying. There is only one thing wrong with fish; people don’t eat enough of it. Fish provides, among other things, protein, vitamin D, selenium, and the all important omega-3 fatty acids. Needless to say it’s a major part of my diet and I get a hankering for it throughout the week. When I don’t have it on hand to fry or broil at home I head down to my favorite fishing holes, Hook Line and Sinker.

Hook Line and Sinker is located on the corner of McKinney and Lemmon Ave. It has an inside dining area as well as an uber nice outside patio. No need to dress all fancy, this is casual dining at its best. You place your order at the counter, where there is an overhead menu, and then given a buzzer to let you know when your order is ready. After that it’s pretty much serve yourself. Not to worry though the service is great and they will happily help carry food items to your table.  Continue reading

Ceviche – Cool, Fresh, Craveworthy‏

by Jon Alexis

Who among us doesn’t crave something cool and citrusy when the thermometer starts going crazy? Now how about something cool and citrusy that can be made in the AC and doesn’t even require a stove or grill?

For these reasons, as well as being delicioso, ceviche is the perfect summer dish. Unlike the burgers and hot dogs we pound all summer long, this is a dish you can eat by the pool…and still look good in your bathing suit the next day.

Ceviche is not a specific recipe, although there are some basic guidelines: fresh raw fish “cooked” in citrus juice, mixed with vegetables and spices. Combine and let sit a few hours or even over night.    Continue reading
