Bread Zeppelin Rocks Our Lunch

DSC09721by Steven Doyle

Lunch today was fresh and different. Although it consisted of a salad and sandwich, these were not your ordinary lunch choices. We checked out Bread Zeppelin, the unique sandwich shop in Las Colinas.

We chatted with the owners, Troy Charhon and Andrew Schoellkopf, both who have unique culinary backgrounds, and found that the Zeppelin is their own invention. The name sounded as if it was a sandwich choice back East, like a hoagie, grinder or hero, but this was not the case. The Zeppelin is a unique product devised by these guys.   Continue reading

Where To Find A Great Banh Mi In Dallas

bahn_miby Steven Doyle

The banh mi has become more popular in the past few years in Dallas. You see them on menus fused, and sometimes dazed and confused. The sandwich is a by-product of the French occupation of Vietnam, and starts with a wonderful baguette that displays an ever so crisp exterior, and a more inviting soft center. As for fillings, we often think grilled pork, and what a wondefful selection that can be. However, in Vietnam you might find a more interesting and broader choice of meats including Vietnamese sausage, roasted pork, spreadable pork liver pâté, grilled chicken, chicken floss, sardines in tomato sauce, soft pork meatballs in tomato sauce, head cheese, fried eggs, and tofu.

To top your sandwich, you might select fresh or pickled vegetables such as cucumber slices, cilantro, pickled carrots and daikon in shredded form. Common condiments include sriracha, sliced chilies, mayonnaise, and even cheese.

We found some delicious versions of the banh mi in the Dallas area:   Continue reading

Chicagoland’s Al’s Italian Beef Coming To Addison

als1by Steven Doyle

Considered one of the best sandwiches in America, the Italian Beef is certainly hard to beat. The sandwich is made up of thin slices of seasoned roast beef, dripping with meat juices, on a dense, long Italian-style roll. The bread itself is often dipped into the juices the meat is cooked in, and topped off with Chicago-style giardiniera (called “hot”) or sauteed, green Italian sweet peppers (called “sweet”). The origins of the sandwich date back to 1938 when Al Fererri conjured it up to serve at weddings in Chicago. Meat was scarce, and the thin slices went a long way.

Over the years the Chicago family moved a tiny stand through out Little Italy, and settled at its current location, 1078 West Taylor. Al’s Italian Beef is legendary in those parts and across the states where Chicago expats compare interloping sandwich makers to their beloved original.    Continue reading

Bread Zeppelin Lands On Plymouth Rock

Bread Zeppelin Plymouth Rock 3
by Jennifer Thomas

You remember the cool little sandwich shop we wrote about a few months back when they opened. These guys make incredible sandwiches from hollowed out baguettes, and some really, really good salads. Bread Zeppelin is celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday with the debut of the Plymouth Rock.

This crunchable creation is available through the end of 2013 and is comprised of oven roasted turkey, cranberries, beets, bleu cheese crumbles, caramelized pecans and an Arcadian mix of greens. Toss it with their house-made Champagne Vinaigrette or a Cranberry Poppy Seed Vinaigrette and you’ll be thankful you tried it!  This cornucopia of flavors is available as a chopped salad for $9.49 or in a Zeppelin for $7.69.
