First Look: Addison’s Lazaranda

by Steven Doyle

Lazaranda Mexican Seafood Grill quietly opened nearly two weeks ago in Addison. The new Mexican restaurant is part of a very small chain located in Monterrey that includes five of their restaurants, and is the first of its brand to open in the United States.  The casual restaurant serves primarily grilled seafood dishes made with a  lazaranda, a small basket that holds the fish while roasted on the grill.

We checked out the new restaurant this week to get a feel for its surroundings and menu and were quite pleased with the findings. We chose not to attend the media blitz that occured before the opening and paid for our meal this past weekend.   Continue reading →

Investigating the Con Artists

by Adam Sachs

I arrived at this year’s Art Conspiracy 7 not knowing what to expect, my experiences with the Dallas art scene mostly associated with visits to Deep Ellum and Design District galleries while living with an art-collecting roommate years ago.

The lively and freewheeling spirit echoing through the South Dallas warehouse was a vast departure from the more quiet and intimate exhibitions of my previous outings.  This energy has been characteristic of the event since its first year in 2005; “the auctions were done by bullhorn the first year,” said Executive Team Member Erica Felicella.   Continue reading →

Fairmont’s Art Immersion Experience Tastes Wonderful

by Steven Doyle

This weekend we were invited to check out the new Art Immersion Learning Experience at the Dallas Fairmont Hotel. The hotel has put together an art package that includes one night of their luxury accommodations, a one hour session with Ross Akard Gallery owner Bryan Embry, a walking tour of the Dallas Arts District, an hour session with the current Artist-in-Residence, and a specially prepared art dinner created by the Pyramid’s chef, Andre Natera.    Continue reading →

Local Artist Mallow Plays Games

by Steven Doyle

Last Friday, 11/11/11, we were treated to a fantastic gallery experience at 2626 Main Street in Deep Ellum. Local artist Mikki Mallow premiered over 20 new pieces at her Games People Play show.  The interactive exhibit featured roaming children dressed in costumes from board games.  We never could pin down the Monopoly man for a decent photo, but he was there in top hat and tails adorning his cane.

A band played through out the night and were also children, but they jammed to some fantastic game-inspired music such as Pin Ball Wizard.    Continue reading →

The Great Tomato Battle

by Christina Beard

If you had told me this time last year that I would be participating in a giant food fight and paying to do so, I would have told you that you were out of your mind. However, for some reason, when I saw the deal come up for 50% off of the inaugural Tomato Battle in Dallas, I couldn’t resist. So, Saturday afternoon, I found myself driving to Fair Park prepared for the biggest (and only) food fight in which I have ever participated.                 Continue reading →

Beer Week: Deep Ellum Brewing Taps First Keg

by Steven Doyle

The starting bell has chimed and they’re off.  Dallas Beer Week officially begins today and there are plenty of options abound to quench your craft beer thirst.

Actually, the unofficial start was last night at the Anvil Pub with the very first commercial tapping of Deep Ellum Brewing Company’s brew, both their Backslider Blonde and a Double Brown Stout.  The boys at Deep Ellum were on hand to celebrate and there were many revelers  lined up to be the very first to sample their new product.   Continue reading →
