Food has been at the heart of the State Fair of Texas since the gates first opened in 1886. Since 2005, each year State Fair concessionaires cook up tasty and unique foods for a chance to become a finalist in the Big Tex Choice Awards. In 2013, the Big Tex Choice Awards winners were chosen from eight finalists. Fried Thanksgiving Dinner, created by Justin Martinez, won Most Creative, and the Best Tasting food item was awarded to Issac Russo for his creation, the Fried Cuban Roll.

A group of contestants presented their creations to the State Fair of Texas in August. The field has been narrowed to eight. A panel of prestigious judges will pick winners in the two categories – Best Tasting & Most Creative. What Does A Billion Dollar Burger Taste Like?

DSC03510by Steven Doyle

Brooke Egger is on the last leg of her tenure at Kitchen LTO. LTO is the quirky restaurant that changes chefs and concepts every four months, which is decided on by the public via and online voting system. The Trinity Groves restaurant is on its third chef, and the model seems to be working out very well. Each chef has been endeared with a public that enjoys their restaurants squeaky new. Egger comes to us from Santa Barbara, California and has a penchant for meat. She comes from a storied history of butchers, which fits well within the Dallas dining model.   Continue reading →

Kate Weiser Opening Her Chocolate Shop August 19th

DSC03535by Steven Doyle

Your wait for something terrifically sweet is nearly over. What has been almost two years in the making is about to come to fruition in Trinity Groves. When chocolatier Kate Weiser opens her doors August 19th it will have much the same wonderment of Wonkaland when Gene Wilder waved his cane as the flowing colors of sweets sparkled in the eyes of the children who stood in glee.

We were able to slow Kate down just for a moment this week to chat a bit about her grand opening. That in itself is a feat of magic since she is highhandedly orchestrating the operations with her tiny band of pastry chefs. Kate is a human dynamo, packed with energy with on setting: full steam. Read on for our chat with Kate.   Continue reading →

Psst…The New Best Place For Your Big Event

IMG_4515

by Andrew Chalk
Which hotel will you use for your next wedding/charity fundraiser/corporate event? If you think it may not matter because of their similarity, and if you have already done the marvelous  Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field, then consider moving south….to the Dallas Zoo. I attended a 100 person meeting there recently at the Flamingo Room. That picture above is the view. There is a deck outside and the zoo is taking advantage of its biggest draw — the animals. They bring well-behaved ones out where guests can get up close. You won’t find that at the hotel you were thinking about.   Continue reading →

Martini Fest Saturday, August 16 At Cool River

martiniby Steven Doyle

We checked into the Martini Festival at Cool River last year, and it lived mightily up to its name. There were twenty brands with their various representatives mixing up martinis , both stirred and shaken. In addition, the crowd noshed on some pretty terrific appetizers. If that wasn’t enough, they raffled off plenty of nifty items to keep the crowd interested. If this sounds like something you might enjoy doing this Saturday night, then make your reservations now by calling the cats at Cool River, 972.871.8881.  The party begins this Saturday, August 16 at 7:30. See you there.

Pegaso in Fort Worth Opens August 19

pegaso

From the world of press releases we find this in our in-box today. Pegaso has been reported as Monica Greene’s new restaurant, but in actuality Miss Monica is consulting partner on the project. As a fast casual concept it looks mightily like BEE (Best Enchilada Ever) in Oak Cliff was. You remember BEE, the fast casual build-your-own burrito bar. Miss that place, because thy were pretty damned good enchiladas.  Anyway, on to the press release business.   Continue reading →
