Coffee House Cafe is Steaming Hot

by Steven Doyle

As we reported first on craveDFW the Coffee House Café is open after ironing out the first week’s kinks in staff, and the kitchen is humming along in full swing.

The restaurant that is located on the south west corner of Frankford and Preston and owned by first time restaurateur Carrie Kelleher fills a niche in the area that lacks a proper breakfast, brunch and lunch menu. Indeed, this is all the Coffee House is serving at the moment.  Continue reading →

People’s Choice Breakfast: Smoke

by Steven Doyle

With a clear, hands down victory we award this weeks People’s Choice Award for Breakfast to Smoke located at the Belmont Hotel in Oak Cliff.

The funky hotel located at the highest point in Dallas has come into its own with the guidance of chef Tim Byres, who over the past year has garnered top honors not just locally, but across the nation. For those visiting Smoke for any meal they will surely attest to his ingenuity in the kitchen, with certain kudos to the Smoke breakfast and brunch menu which features such luminous dishes as a bruleed grapefruit served with the hearty Gristmill Cheese Grits-Hominy Casserole, or the House Made Ricotta Cheese Pancakes that is heavy-laden with a satchel of blueberries.  Continue reading →

Tre Wilcox is tough.  His fearless attitude in the kitchen has lead him to creating his ultimate masterpiece: Marquee Grill – an innovative twist on Modern American Cuisine.  This week I had the amazing opportunity to interview Chef Wilcox for our Sunday Brunch series.  He’ll be sharing his “Bacon” and Waffles – a house cured pork belly served alongside a stack of buttermilk waffles and drizzled with a huckleberry maple syrup.   Continue reading →

Coffee House Cafe: Exclusive Look

by Steven Doyle      photos by Robert Bostick

In just a matter of two weeks Dallas will see a new restaurant on the scene located just to the west of Preston on Frankford that will serve breakfast, brunch and lunch called Coffee House Café. You may have seen the construction over the past few moths at the large building that was formerly a series of Tex Mex restaurants, and the new owner is happily setting up her happy kingdom that should rule the for a long time to come.

Single mom Carrie Kelleher is new to the restaurant industry but she has gone to extreme lengths to ensure her success. First, she bought the building. Then Kelleher went to industry leaders to develop menus and learn the business from the back of the house perspective. We actually met her while testing dishes at the Milestone Culinary Center many months ago.

Her background is impressive, working in corporate America and in the non-profit sector as well as an adjunct professor at UTD but has always had a desire to be in hospitality.  Continue reading →

Vegan Girl Does Brunch at Company Cafe

by Melissa Brenner

For some odd reason brunch is the absolute hardest meal to get as a vegan in Dallas. Most vegan places don’t serve brunch; those that do don’t serve alcohol (which is most of the fun of brunch, right? I mean you need that Mimosa or Bloody Mary to recover from Saturday night). When I do go out for brunch the alcohol is usually all I can have and as much as that sounds like a good idea, it’s really not.

Brunch is pretty egg-centric in the mainstream food world, so I get that it can be an intimidating meal for a non-vegan restaurant or chef. We have become adept at mastering the flax egg and other replacements, as evidenced by the amazing pot luck brunches thrown by the Dallas Vegan group, but those are not items that an omnivore might even imagine as options.  Continue reading →
