One Art in Commissary Opens Tonight

by Steven Doyle

Today marks the opening of The Commissary’s  restaurant-within-a-restaurant One Art. We were fortunate to be part of the few to preview some of the offerings that the new restaurant will offer and will share the photos below.

It is interesting to note that unlike the One Art predecessor, The Table, there will be a few changes. One notable change is price. Chef-owner John Tesar noted last evening that the all night multi-course room wasn’t as successful due to the economy, and scaled the menu back by lowering price points, offering an ala carte menu, and sticking to more basic ingredients rather than the foie and caviar heavy approach he had before.    Continue reading

Ben and Jerry Have Shweddy Balls

by Steven Doyle

It’s not April first, so we have no reason to believe this is a hoax, but according to the Ben and Jerry website they plan to introduce a new flavor lovingly named “Shweddy Balls”.

Presumably both Ben and Jerry agree this is a flavor you will not be able to resist, naming the new flavor after a Saturday Night Live bit that featured Alec Baldwin as deadpan confectioner Pete Shweddy who often appeared on a public access program called “The Delicious Dish”.     Continue reading

Wrapping Chocolate Conference 2011

by Steven Doyle   photos by Suzi Migdol

The Chocolate Conference 2011 detail was one of those dreamy assignments that from the outset couldn’t possibly suck, and the name lived up to all expectations. This past Saturday morning, and on into the late afternoon, a hoard of chocophiles lined up and paid their small entry fee into the event that was held at the Addison Conference Center with the promise of sampling and learning more about their obsession – chocolate.

Each of the attendees were given a slew of tickets that they could trade for a sample of chocolate from each of the vendors on hand, some local and others who had traveled from across the country.  Continue reading

Best Restaurant Winner: Parigi

by Steven Doyle

The people have spoken and it was a neck and neck battle to the finish. There were plenty of votes for such luminaries as Nonna and Lucia, but the real battle for reader’s favorite was between The Grape on Greenville Avenue and Parigi on Oak Lawn. Continue reading

Restaurant Week: Trulucks

by David Donalson

Restaurant Week has a special place in my heart. For many of us, this is our opportunity to experience some of the finer establishments in DFW and support great causes in both the North Texas Food Bank and Lena Pope Home. It was through Restaurant Week that I discovered Pappa Bros. Steak House and Chamberlain’s Fish Market Grill, places I had wanted to go to but did not ever get around to going to. This year, my wife and I decided to focus on places we have not been to yet but thought might be worth a visit, hence a quick drive over to Southlake to try out Trulucks.

Walking in, you are immediately greeted with dark wood and white tablecloths. On the left was the wine cellar, a clear glass room with wine stacked high, and on the center and right were the main tables for the restaurant. We were quickly seated along a window overlooking the Southlake Town Center and with a clear view of the other guests, some of whom were more cozy than I would have preferred (seriously, making out between courses is for 16 year olds, not 30 somethings!). We asked for the Restaurant Week menu with wine pairings and away we go.  Continue reading

We Like Paper and Chocolate

by Steven Doyle

It wasn’t long ago that we sat with Vicki Peterson from Paper and Chocolate, which is located in the Inwood Village Shopping Center in Dallas,  after we heard she was expanding her lines of chocolate after many years of dedication to her stationary store.  Having just won D Magazine’s Best Stationers award we thought it might be a good time to see what this dedicated entrepreneur was up to.

As we chatted with the whimsical shop owner we found out that paper is certainly not her only love, but also has an extremely vivacious passion for all things chocolate.  But not just any chocolate as you will soon see.  She is a purist and only the best will suit her palate.

After reading this you may wish to visit Paper and Chocolate today as they celebrate the D Magazine victory and offer some unique samples and champagne all day.  If you miss all the hoopla, you can still find her growing inventory at the store where she has slated a major expansion in this area of confections.  Continue reading
