Going Local at Bolsa Mercado

by Steven Doyle

This weekend we took a stroll into the fairly new Bolsa Mercado top check out some of the local products they are moving at break-neck speeds. We ran into on of the owners, Chris Zielke and he showed us around a bit. You will recognize the name from his other Bolsa, the restaurant, just a few doors down the street.

“This is so much different than running the restaurant. I come in on a Monday morning and the shelves are bare, and I have to start all over again,” said Zielke.                Continue reading

A Visit to Sublime Chocolate

by Jerry Stewart

There are some fantastic chocolatiers in the DFW area. Certainly much praise has gone towards Dude, Sweet in Bishop Arts, as well as the many others we have reported on in the past year. Last week we had a chance to step up north for a unique and fun chocolate shop called Sublime Chocolate Bar.    Continue reading

Crave Stuff To Enjoy While Reading Crave

by Steven Doyle

Pegasus News and FW Star Telegram food critic Teresa Gubbins sends us word that there is a new product we might want to investigate. She sent over a link to the Dallas Morning News where they actually reviewed a new breakfast cereal called Krave.

News writer Jeffrey Weiss didn’t care much for the new cereal being test marketed in North Texas, using words like ‘sawdust’ and ‘cold, fibrous mush’ to describe a bowl he prepared for himself. At one point he even threw out the most oft used culinary term ‘Yuck-o’, so we are thinking the near-namesake cold cereal is not going to be high on our shopping list for the craveDFW test kitchens.   Continue reading

Chocolate Tour Visits Dude, Sweet

by Steven Doyle

Last weekend I was able to help guide the Dallas by Chocolate Tour, a new tour company that shuttles guests around in a luxury bus making a handful of stops only to taste chocolate. In the next few days I will share some of the stops and the chocolates we sampled. This past tour took us to Neuhaus Café  in North Dallas, Scardello, who sells some pretty damned good chocolate including Oh* Brownies and paired samples with cheese, CocoAndrē and Dude, Sweet Chocolate.

Today we take a look at Dude, Sweet Chocolate where pastry chef Katherine Clapner hosted the group of chocolate tourists and shared her insight into her own brand.  Continue reading

Clapner Hosting Chocolate Event at Las Colinas Beverage

by Steven Doyle

Recently Katherine Clapner of Dude, Sweet Chocolate has been taking her wares on the road.  Last week she could be found at the Bottle Shop on Greenville Avenue pairing chocolate with beer.  This Friday she is pairing wines with chocolate, and then Saturday she moves on to cheese.

As many know, Clapner is about the unexpected when it comes to her chocolate and she delights in showing its versatility. Pairing chocolate with wine might be more expected, but matching chocolate with cheese and beer gives us insight to her charm.     Continue reading

Secret Fall Menu Preview at Horne and Dekker

by Steven Doyle

We just received word from the guys at Horne and Dekker, the kitschy restaurant on Henderson next to Veritas that features a really great cure for a slow moving Sunday with their Hangover Brunch featured here some months ago. This is the limitless drinks and eats that is followed later in the day with the same idea on a Sunday dinner.   Continue reading

New Foods at the State Fair

by Steven Doyle

The doors are about to open at the State Fair of Texas and we will be in the Creative Arts Building hosting all the celebrity chefs that will demo every day during the Fair. We hope to bring you some great interviews of the chefs, and also interesting behind the scenes stories from the fairgrounds.

With all the fried goodies it will be difficult to stave off temptation, but we will have access to the employees commissary for our daily meals if we so choose. This should be fun because this is where most of the carnies dine.

For those not wanting to dine with the carnies we have a list of all the new treats to sample during this year’s Fair.    Continue reading
