by Steven Doyle       photos by Suzi Migdol

Last night marked the second craveDFW happy hour and we celebrated with incredible Maker’s Mark 46  cocktails and bites of Ranger Rolls made by chef Brad Albers at Eddie V’s  on Oak Lawn.

The beautiful lounge was the perfect setting for the happy hour that filtered on into watching the World Series at the bar.   Continue reading

Vegan Girl Goes to the Veggie Fair

by Melissa Brenner         photos by Suzi Migdol

If you missed the Texas Veggie State Fair, you were one of the few. The last day of the Texas State Fair was set as the day for promoting fun, food and frolicking without animal products of any kind.

The threat of rain and mud did not stop the swarm of attendees. This, the second annual Texas Veggie State Fair, drew a much larger crowd than last year. The 1500 raffle wristbands were gone before the event was half over, leading organizers to believe between 2000-3000 attended the event.     Continue reading

More 828 Action

by Steven Doyle    photos by Suzi Migdol

We have more photos from last Friday’s version of the 828 pop-up bar. In speaking with Michael Martensen, he said that the space is so much fun that he is considering taking the location for his next venture and keep it much the way you see it today. This would be a good thing. We have enjoyed the first week of 828, beautifully collaborative venture between Martensen and fellow barmen across the city.           Continue reading

Hidden Gems: Garden Café, Beyond the Booze Bills

by Adam Sachs    photos by Suzi Migdol

Crave reported last week about the vote that prohibited Garden Café from serving alcohol. In light of all the recent press on this issue, I thought it time to focus on Garden Café on its own terms. They have been around nearly nine years, and established themselves as a neighborhood institution with an identity that goes much deeper than the ability to serve beer and wine. I sat down with owner Dale Wootton and his son Mark to learn about the past, present, and future of Garden Café.

Dale Wootton purchased the building in 1991, thinking it was a “diamond in the rough” with an area that looked conducive to his favorite pastime of gardening. “I had all these plans [with the building] for what real estate appraisers call the highest and best use for land,” he said, “but I decided that I wanted to do what I wanted to do and not the highest invest use. So that’s why we came up with the idea of a garden, a peaceful relaxing place, where if you need some basil, you run out here and pick it.”   Continue reading

Suzi Eats New Orleans

by Suzi Migdol

Still scouring the streets of New Orleans, which is never a bad thing, it was getting late and our party was looking for a little Southern hospitality that the Big Easy had to offer. Many of the locals pointed to The Ruby Slipper to help fill our welcoming needs along with a great meal. The cute building that housed The Ruby Slipper was warm and intimate.  Essence of garlic emanating from the kitchen filled the room, assuring us that we had definitely made the right choice for dinner.    Continue reading
