Pop-Up 828 Closes in Style

We followed the pop-up charity fundraising lounge 828 over the past few weeks and it seemed only appropriate that we bring you the final photos for the bar from last Saturday evening.

The lounge that was temporarily located at 828 West Davis in North Oak Cliff enjoyed a busy three week run that was hosted by Cedars Social’s Michael Martensen and managed nightly by the unofficial Oak Cliff ambassador, Rob Shearer. The bar was run nightly by Martensen and Brian McCullough of the soon-to-open Standard Pour. Guest bartenders from across DFW filtered in nightly to lend a hand for the cause. Continue reading →

Opera Lucia Meets Restaurant Lucia

Attending the opening night of Lucia di Lammermoor was quite an experience. The Dallas Opera was gracious enough to show the live performance under the stars at no charge on a very large screen with pretty awesome fidelity. However if you were fortunate enough to have an actual seat for that evening you would have been rubbing elbows with gents in top hats and their sexy escorts donning incredible jewels and gowns.

For an opera night in Dallas the evening was a bit more snazzy than usual, whispered several Winspear employees as they escorted us to our seats. Typical nights are more relaxed, and the TDO seems to be going through a concerted effort to cater to all walks of life interested in great music. Continue reading →

Last Week For Speakeasy 828

As many are aware, we have personally enjoyed the pop-up speakeasy 828 that so many are wagging on about today, and for a few good reasons. First there is this dynamic charitable aspect that allows us to cocktail in comfort knowing each buck brings happiness to others. To date, the pop-up has raised thousands for Promise House. Then there is the long wagon train of great bar peeps pouring insanely great drinks, each one attempting to top the other in a friendly fanfare of boozy bliss.

This week 828 is getting a facelift from Again and Again while owner Leslie Pritchard is busy loading a slew of cool furnishings into the lounge. Guaranteed that will be amazing. If you spot something you like, it is all for sale with a percentage going to the charity. Continue reading →

Blues Bandits and BBQ Makes for Smoking Hot Weekend

The weekend was crazy busy with activities including the second annual Blues, Bandits and BBQ held at Lake Cliff Park Saturday. The assorted barbecue teams started working early Friday evening and camped out at the park honing their recipes, developing smoke rings, and otherwise having a little party of their own. Blues, Bandits and BBQ

The 2nd Annual Blues, Bandits and BBQ event will take place Saturday, October 22nd, 2011 and will be held at Lake Cliff Park. There’s lots of fun planned for this year, and lots of great changes and additions that will make this even more fun than last year.

The BBQ Teams have already started planning and practicing, and they will arrive Friday night to begin cooking. If you would like to be one of the lucky ‘People’s Choice’ participants and try the BBQ from the teams competing, then you will need to buy a BBQ tasting pass for the event. Continue reading →

More 828 Action

We have more photos from last Friday’s version of the 828 pop-up bar. In speaking with Michael Martensen, he said that the space is so much fun that he is considering taking the location for his next venture and keep it much the way you see it today. Last evening we popped into 828, the pop-up speakeasy in Oak Cliff that benefit’s the Promise House, and found a whole host of DFW cocktail legends behind and in front of the bar.

The brainchild of Michael Martensen and Eddie “Lucky” Campbell who will soon open their own bar tentatively entitled Rock and Rye, are using the lounge as a launch pad for the bar and to raise funds for the charity. Continue reading →
