In the past weeks leading up to Christmas we have been visiting various tamale makers in the Dallas area including La Popular and Abraham Salum at Komali where we got a primer in the art of tamales. This week we visited a very special woman who lives in the Oak Cliff area very near her son, co-owner of Coevál Studio and the new restaurant Campo Modern Country Bistro, John Paul Valverde.
We had asked John Paul if he had any leads on a good tamale maker and he sat back for a moment then smiled, “my mother makes the best tamales.” Continue reading

Newsflash! They do not grow grapes in Oak Cliff. However, there is an Oak Cliff Cellars. Owner Jim “JR” Richardson lives in an Oak Cliff neighborhood with his wife Maria, but makes wine in Calistoga, California at the northern end of Napa Valley. And from the selection JR was pouring this week at a special wine dinner at City Café, where we were an invited guest, he does a splendid job of it as well.
Oak Cliff Cellars is a fully-bonded commercial winery, specializing in small lot production of premium Northern California wines (less than a few hundred cases each of our favorite varietals — Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay). They purchase their grapes from select vineyards each year and blend their own wines and ship out across the country. Continue reading

We have a few shout outs for the weekend and think you might enjoy a few of these. There are a few things going on that you might enjoy.
First let us mention that we saw Miguel Vicéns and John Paul Valverde owners of Campo Modern Country Bistro last night and they wanted to let everyone know they do indeed have a liquor license. There were just a few days in the beginning that they did not have one, but now you can enjoy the cocktail program designed by Brad Hensarling of Fort Worth’s The Usual at the new Oak Cliff restaurant.
Saturday you can start your Christmas shopping by purchasing wares from local artisans at the Dallas Flea, the occasional market located in the Southside of Lamar at 1409 S. Lamar. Here you will find amazing clothing, jewelry, food and vintage wear all under one room and made by some super cool locals. Continue reading
