Old Fashioned “Barn” Raising

The weather couldn’t have been ordered up more perfectly than it was delivered for the “Barn” Raising event at Eden’s Organic Garden Center & CSA Farm in Balch Springs yesterday. Everyone, it seems, loves fresh, natural, “yard-eggs”. Marie was selling her eggs through her CSA and on-farm market, when the supply was sufficient. Availability can be a real problem, however, when predators moved in to her urban farm where her chickens enjoy total and absolute “free-range”. “The recent drought has moved predators in much closer than ever before in the 10 years there have been chickens here.” Says, Marie Tedei, owner of Eden’s.   Continue reading

Chesterfield’s Opens Today for Lunch

We checked out the new Chesterfield’s which opens its doors today and is owned by Eddie “Lucky” Campbell and Ed Bailey (of Bailey’s Prime Plus). The small, but plush lounge is located at 1404 Main Street in downtown Dallas. The look and feel will take you back to Prohibition times. The waitresses even have a flapper-ish look about them at the new bar.

While sampling a few of the small plates offered by chef Michael Ehlert we were also able to taste some of the superb cocktails . The food we were able to try had a Middle Eastern flair and were extremely flavorful and well executed by Ehlert. Think kabobs and falafel. We were also able to sample a foie torchon, so the menu is not just simple bar fare. Early press releases mentioned flat breads and heartier dishes such as braised short ribs. Continue reading

Where’s the Love? Where’s The Poutine?

Poutine is the national dish of Canada and is made of French fries, squeaky cheese curds and a thin brown gravy. Sounds ideal for the taco and burger hungry crowds in Dallas, right? Then why is this dish completely elusive on restaurant menus?

We have taken in many other Canadian imports such as Wayne Gretzky, William Shatner and Monty Hall, Crown Royal, why won’t they send this luscious, steamy dish down to Texas to play?    Continue reading

Party With Partida Tequila at Dish Tonight

The good folks at Dish wanted me to share with you information about a special happy they are doing tonight. If you are looking for some really good tequila, or just want to super-charge the start of your weekend, stop in at Dish for complimentary samples of Partida Tequila  and five buck skinny margaritas. The fun starts at 5pm and lasts until 7pm, plenty of time to sample the tequila and check out the new bar menu.

NYE at Marquee

I stopped in Marquee  last night to screen a new film. The theater is absolutely gorgeous, the film not so much. It was a preview of the upcoming New Years Eve that is rampant with hip stars of the day including Katherine Heigl, Jon Bon Jovi, Jessica Biel and Ashton Kutcher to name just a few.

The movie was not all that memorable, but we did happen to run into Jason Komsas, the starring bartender and beverage director for Marquee. He filled us in on a few options they are doing for New Years Eve, which should prove much more exciting than the film.     Continue reading

Ribald Cakes For That Special Party

Last week we stopped in to visit a shop that is not your typical culinary outlet in Dallas. Condom Nation  is now making what we believe to be the only professional ‘porn’ cakes in North Texas. These are the type of cakes you might find at a bachelor or bachelorette party, or perhaps to serve after a particularly bad divorce. There might be other occasions for these pastries, like for your naughtiest friend’s birthday. You get the idea.
