Wachu Tacobot, Willis? Top 5 Street Tacos of 2011

The TacoBots invade Pepe’s y Mito’s

by Danielle Leahy         photos by Jacque Manaugh

The street taco meet-ups got off to a rough start in 2011. It’s hard to find a taco stand that can hold 20 or more people, most of them non Spanish speakers, and many of which have not ever ordered real street tacos before. It’s limiting to say the least. For anyone still unaware “street” tacos or “traditional” Mexican tacos are usually quite small, served on 1-2 corn tortillas, and usually only topped with meat, onions, and cilantro with lime and salsa on the side.

They are usually also very cheap, $1.20 on average. Long limited to the gas stations, grocery stores and street corners around traditional Spanish neighborhoods traditional tacos or more specifically, ordering traditional street tacos, can seem like a scary experience for Tex-Mex lovers looking to try the real thing. So we before we begin our review of the five best street tacos and locations the Tacobots visited in 2011. Lets begin with a break down of the meats.             Continue reading

5 Dallas Food Trends We Enjoyed in 2011

by Steven Doyle

There were many advances in the Dallas restaurant scene in 2011, and we are looking for many more in the coming new year. We would like to take a moment to bring attention to several exciting trends that took place. Later in the week we will focus on some trends we would like to see spring up in Dallas.     Continue reading

Holiday Burlesque Tonight at Trees

by Courtney Crush

The holidays have long been cursed with the drudge of traditions that don’t always escalate the spirits. Let’s face it. “The Nutcracker” is several hours of yawn with an intermission fit for coffee zapped with a double shot in hopes of not interrupting the second act with snores from the mezzanine. A second act? It’s not over yet? Blech! That isn’t to say that occasionally a tear of nostalgia doesn’t spring to the mind’s eye every now and then.

Ballet is an exceptional art form of beauty and poise. Nonetheless, by the caffeine infused second act, my eyes have fuzzed over and I’m recreating the storyline with more drama and less clothes. A sprinkle of sugar and spice goes a long way to kindle enthusiasm. What if “The Nutcracker” was performed in the tradition of burlesque? Now that’s a show I could stay awake for.  Continue reading

6 Holiday Beers for Dallas

by Tait Lifto

Seasonal Greetings to you, Dallas! I say “seasonal” because Christmas brings more than presents under the tree, it also means seasonal offerings from craft brewers around the world. I’m going to highlight a few holiday and winter beers for you in different formats: one is a very large bottle good for parties, two are great beers you can only get in a restaurant, and the other three are bottles small enough to enjoy yourself or give away as gifts.

The beers I’m choosing have different taste profiles but all help make you feel a bit nicer on a cold winter day. I’ve personally tried all of the beers listed here and had them right here in Dallas – if you need help finding one, place a comment and I’ll do my best to respond.                   Continue reading

There’s Mercy For That Hangover

by Steven Doyle

There are a few side effects of racing through so many cocktails in the maddening attempt to find the perfect and most satisfying drink. Each week we throw on display some of the best cocktaliers Dallas has to offer. This week it was Lucky’s libations over at the new Chesterfield, the week before it was Matt’s at Tate’s on McKinney. Coming up next we will be sampling the drinks at Oak and the yet-to-open Standard Pour. There is always a new drink to sip, and to be perfectly honest, I like it that way.

But that damned side effect — the hangover. It can often lie in wait, making you suffer through your day in regret.    Continue reading

Wachu TacoBot Willis: Our 5 Best Gourmet Tacos of the Year

by Danielle Leahy                photos by Jacque Manaugh

Before I begin my year end review of the top 5 gourmet tacos in Dallas I’d like to offer a few caveats. First of all I’m not a food reviewer, I’m a taco club founder and manager. I bring groups of people together (often strangers) to eat tacos and have fun. Most of the places we visit are because they have been recommended or have recieved plenty of buzz. The locations must be able to hold groups of twenty-plus Tacobots. That alone can cross a lot of the smaller taco stands, gas stations, or far away locations off the list.

That said I present to you what are in my opinion the five best gourmet tacos in Dallas as well as some my favorite places to grab a taco in the city. These are the locations the Tacobots had the most fun and enjoyed the best, and isn’t that what it’s all about? If you are looking to try something new or have friends in town wanting to see what Dallas has to offer on this burgeoning nation food trend of upscale tacos might the Tacobots suggest…       Continue reading

Fearing at Cane Rosso

by Bryan Coonrod

Monday night marked another installment of Cane Rosso’s Industry Night  at the Deep Ellum restaurant which invites a new guest chef to create a special pizza for the evening. This was one of the most anticipated nights in the series with Dean Fearing  offering up his ideas of a great pizza. And how great it was with three pies to choose from.

On the menu Fearing had a buffalo tenderloin, a smoked pork ragu and a barbecue shrimp pizza. Of course I had to try all three. Knowing the vast following Fearing I knew getting there early would be the smart thing to do. Smart move since all of Fearing’s pizzas were sold out by 7:30pm.   Continue reading
