Dallas Beer Week Starts Nov 12

by Steven Doyle

Dallas Beer Week is upon us and craveDFW plans to be your source for all things beer during the coming week leading up to the first events beginning this weekend.  For the past few weeks we have been scouring the city in search of the best places to have a good craft beer during the nearly 90 (and growing) activities planned so far.

We chatted with Cathy Rascoe, the organizer of Dallas Beer Week and she said, “It has been a true labor of love for us and we are really excited that the Dallas craft beer community has embraced it. We really hope to make everyone proud and happy with the results this year and for several years to come.”

Rascoe also was the organizer of Houston’s very successful Beer Week.   Continue reading

McCallister Does Cafe Momentum

by David Donalson               photos by Robert Bostick

Sunday night was the sixth installment of Cafe Momentum, a Dallas-based restaurant and culinary training program working in conjunction with the Youth Village Resources of Dallas (YVRD) to train students in all aspects of working in a restaurant. These students would be our waiters, platers, dish-washers and other such jobs that are crucial for a restaurant, giving them valuable experience that can help them get a job in the industry. In fact, several of the students present now have jobs due to their experience of working with such chefs so kudos to all who are supporting the program.

Our chef for Sunday night is a very busy man, Chef Matt McCallister, who was gracious enough to mentor these students just hours before the official opening of Campo Modern in Oak Cliff. I am sure it has been a hectic few weeks for Chef McCallister but I was glad he made time to cook for all 120 people at Hibiscus on Henderson.    Continue reading

Flip You for Dinner

by Steven Doyle

These are times of strange yet imaginative restaurant promotions. In recent months we have seen owners give away food freely to the public, feature half priced menus, and now this little bit of intrigue from Social House Addison, located at 5100 Belt Line. The price of your dinner is determined on a coin toss.

Flip for Food Mondays starts today, November 7 at The Social House in Addison. Patrons can come in, eat to their hearts content, and- if they win the coin toss- pay for only alcohol and gratuity.    Continue reading

McClelland Named Top Toque at Cedars Social

by Crave Staff

Chef Kyle McClelland has been named Executive Chef at The Cedars Social, overseeing the culinary team and kitchen operations, along with revamping the current menu.  Chef McClelland, a Massachusetts native, recently relocated to Dallas from New York City, and is excited about his new position.

“I’m thrilled to be in Dallas and for this new adventure at The Cedars Social,” Chef McClelland says. “I loved working with Michael Martensen on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. I am excited to work with the local suppliers, redevelop the menu and build on what Brian Williams and Michael have done thus far at The Cedars Social.”  Continue reading

by Steven Doyle

Chef Stephan Pyles  just signed a lease this week for 7,500 square feet on the ground floor of Gables Park 17 located on McKinney. Pyles had been looking at the space for some time now and has previously mentioned that he was wanting to update the Star Canyon brand.

Bloody Good Brunch: Bistro 31

by Steven Lindsey    photos by Rob Orta

In the trailer for Paranormal Activity 3, the young girls whose house is haunted are seen in front of the bathroom mirror chanting, “Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary!”—all in the hopes of conjuring up a spirit.

I also chant “Bloody Mary!” multiple times, hoping for a different kind of spirit to appear from thin air. It’s a technique that rarely works unless I’m standing in front of a bar. Yet when I proclaimed this mantra at Bistro 31, I had a truly otherworldly Bloody Mary that made me a believer in not just the supernatural, but the immense skill of GM and mixologist extraordinaire, Marcus Cascio.                                          Continue reading

A Look at The Place at Perry’s New Menu

by Steven Doyle      photos by Susan Migdol

The Place at Perry’s doesn’t mind change. A restaurant that doesn’t wish to be mired into the beefy pit of steakhouses on the Dallas restaurant landscape, the owners of The Place at Perry’s are making some drastic changes.

First, there was the name change in a duel of battling wits with the other restaurant named Perry’s forcing the sign to read as it does today. Now they are about to close for the holidays and reopen mid-January a mere block away from their Routh Street locale to the Gables Villa Rosa building at 2680 Cedar Springs Road.     Continue reading

Gluten Free Class at Milestone

by Crave Staff

The Holidays are upon us. That means more socializing and more get togethers. In short — more eating. It can be a challenging time for people with gluten or other food sensitivities. When local alternative health broadcaster nutrition and expert Cindy Freeling became gluten free, and then later corn free, there were not a lot of options in buying foods that didn’t have these ingredients. So, as a cook she started making her own.

At holidays, Freeling would make a couple of dishes to bring to wherever she was going. Not only did it make her a good dinner guest, but also ensured her that she didn’t feel left out because of not being able to eat some of the food.   Continue reading
