Sean Conner of Whiskey Cake Star of the Bar

by Crave Staff

On Monday at the Dallas ultralounge Candleroom, no one could hold a candle to Sean Conner’s mixology skills. As a result, he could make the cover of GQ Magazine.

Conner, Bar Manager at Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar, won the Dallas finals of the 2011 Nation’s Most Inspired Bartender Search, presented by GQ magazine and Bombay Sapphire. He will represent Dallas in the national Most Inspired contest on Sept. 11-13 at The Palms Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev., the winner of which will be a cover model for GQ, among other accolades.

“It was awesome, and a lot of fun,” Conner said. “I was in the company of a lot of great bartenders from the area, and to win the contest against them was a real honor and a sweet rush.”   Continue reading

Vegan Girl Checks Out The New Baboush

by Melissa Brenner

Baboush’s doors opened in West Village on Monday, August 8th. Three days later, I was there carousing with my vegan drinking crew on their plush couches sipping Sexy Drinks and enjoying one of the best Mediterranean meals I’ve had in quite awhile.

All of the Spreads & Olives are vegan, and so is the pita bread. I am a huge fan of olives, hummus and babaganoush, but I opted to start with the Moroccan Sweet Tomato spread. This dish is penned a sweet tomato spread with cinnamon, garlic, orange water, sesame seeds and almonds.

Some of my cohorts were disturbed at the mention of sweet and cinnamon in a tomato spread, but the first bite evaporated their fears. This tasty spread was a perfect balance of sweet and spice. The tomatoes were cooked to perfection: they spread easily on the (verified vegan) pita with the small spoon provided. The cinnamon tickled the tongue at the finish without overpowering the tangy garlic and the acidic orange.    Continue reading

A Look at Penn Jillete’s Book “Oh, God”

by Steven Doyle

We are a food and entertainment website, so what are we doing reading a book? It was a bit entertaining and included bits about bacon, so it greatly qualifies. We are not making judgment  on Jillete but thought this was entertaining, and the visuals tore me up. The book “Oh, God” is otherwise fairly mundane except for the passage where Penn Jillete explains how he was partially responsible in converting a Hasidic Jew and sharing his first non-kosher meal.

The Hasidic man had listened to Jillete on the radio for some time and enjoyed the Penn Radio program that was formerly on Free FM and ended in 2007. His show was known for more than a few on-air antics such as the time when during Lent, Penn requested his listeners go to McDonalds on Friday morning and purchase all the Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, thus forcing Catholic families with screaming children to eat beef. Penn hoped that the children would realize that eating meat would not send them to hell.   Continue reading

Shakespeare Takes Dallas by Storm

by Crave Staff

There could scarcely be a more provocative start to the season—or a more vivid way to experience Shakespeare’s beloved final play. Unique staging that transports you deeply into the middle of the spectacle, music and dance.

Immortal themes such as the power of forgiveness and the bond between parent and child. And a cast that includes our Brierley Resident Acting Company and actors from SMU’s MFA program. Talk about a conversation starter.    Continue reading
