Club Clearview Reunites for a Night

by Steven Doyle

What started as renegade parties in Deep Ellum  warehouses with cohorts in crime Jeff Swaney, Steve Clohessy, Jeffrey Yarbrough and Mark Cuban who would set up under the lights fueled by generators and selling beer for the price of admission, soon became a legitimate enterprise that led to the opening of Club Clearview in an abandoned curtain warehouse.

The multi-venue club quickly became the heart of Deep Ellum’s music scene in the 80’s and 90’s, hosting national acts such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ministry, as well as birthing locals such as Vanilla Ice and the Dixie Chicks.

The musical Mecca comprised of Club Clearview, Art Bar, Blind Lemon, The Red Room, and Open the Roof Deck. There revelers could enjoy their own form of party, traveling between the venues with their sole connective tissue, a room filled of nearly nude neon clad dancers in cages.   Continue reading

Generations Bridged

by Steven Doyle

For those who grew up in North Dallas, Forest Lane was a hot bed of activity for teenagers looking to cruise old school. A few months ago there was a reunion of about 20,000 alumni and revelers marking a milestone in the lives that exists only in the legends of our minds.

But before we were set to four wheels, there are some that recall the two-wheeled drag strip called the Joe Ratcliff Pedestrian Walkway that tethered Dallas to Farmers Branch, officially to allow easy access to the elementary school on the Farmers Branch side called William L. Cabell.  Continue reading

Step Up To DFW Food Challenges

by Steven Doyle

You’ve seen Adam Richman take on piles of chicken fried steaks, burgers, ghost pepper laden wings and so much more. The man is an eating machine that can’t stop. The Travel Channel star is taking his show to another level by inviting his viewers (you know you watch) to go into competition with this master of gluttony.

To get on the show Man v. Food Nation might take a little bit of P.T. Barnum know-how and the ability to shovel in your pie hole a whole lot of pie. Richman was recently in Dallas with his one man circus filming a few challenges the program created, but there are plenty of agonizing challenges in DFW without making them up for television.

Need some help with ideas on what to tackle in the DFW area? Crave came up with a few that you can enjoy after the jump:   Continue reading

Lamesa’s Sky-Vue Theater and Legendary Chihuahua

by Steven Doyle

Lamesa’s Sky-Vue Drive-In Theater, established in 1948, is well known through out the state. It is one of a handful of drive-in theaters remaining in the state of Texas. Some claim that the drive-in continues to operate merely to serve the legendary “Chihuahua” sandwich (stacked fried corn tortillas filled with homemade chili, onions, shredded cabbage and pimento cheese with a jalapeño pepper on the side) which is a specialty of the outdoor theater.   Continue reading
