Fernie’s Funnel Cake Cream is a Hoot

Fernie’s Funnel Cakes, an enduring fixture at the State Fair of Texas for more than five decades, traces its roots back to 1969 when it first joined the fair as a humble vendor. Since then, it has evolved into an unmistakable symbol of delicious, deep-fried fairground cuisine. Proudly helmed by the dynamic sister-duo of Christi Erpillo and Johnna McKee, Fernie’s Funnel Cakes is now embarking on an exciting new venture: Fernie’s Funnel Cake Cream, a sumptuous wine-based cocktail inspired by their iconic carnival delight. Each 750 ml bottle of Fernie’s Funnel Cake Cream contains 13.9% alcohol volume and is available at an affordable retail price of $14.99 to $17.99 (retailer price will vary). The first bottles will be available at Central Market locations across North Texas this week with deliveries scheduled for Goody Goody, HEB and Spec’s in the following weeks. Attendees to this year’s State Fair of Texas can also enjoy this beverage at any of Fernie’s five stands scattered throughout the fairgrounds.

What Happened to Chartreuse? *Recipe Alert*

by Steven Doyle

This started as a social media post and decided it was too important not to share it with every Crave reader.

Green and Yellow Chartreuse has been made by Carthusian monks since 1737 according to instructions set out in a manuscript given to them by François Annibal d’Estrées in 1605. It was named after the monks’ Grande Chartreuse monastery, located in the Chartreuse Mountains north of Grenoble. Today the liqueur is produced in their distillery in nearby Aiguenoire.

Crave Visits New Allen Portillo’s

by Jay Hoffman

We checked out the soft opening at the new Portillo’s in Allen, Texas. This marks their second location in Texas and the first one is in The Colony, Texas. Additional locations will be in Arlington, Texas soon and Ft. Worth, Texas later in the year.

Portillo’s is celebrating their 60th Anniversary when it started in 1963 by the name of man Dick Portillo and now his son Mike Portillo helps run the operation. In 1963, Dick Portillo invested $1,100 into a small trailer to open the first Portillo’s hot dog stand in Villa Park, IL, which he called “The Dog House.” Years later, Portillo’s has become a brand synonymous with Chicago.

In fact, they’re kind of a big dill– people and claim it’s not a real trip to Chicago unless you eat at Portillo’s. Fortunately, die-hard fans and first-timers alike have their choice of Portillo’s restaurants, as they’ve beefed up to more than 70 locations across several states.
