Celebrate Bastille Day at Lavendou July 10-14

The 228th anniversary of the Bastille storming and launch of the French Revolution will be celebrated with another stellar Fete de la Bastille dinner, served Monday July 10 to Friday, July 14 at one of Dallas’ premier French restaurants, Lavendou.

The Lavendou Fête de la Bastille 2017 menu has fantastic choices among three courses, including:  Salade Frisée au Confit de Canard – curly salad with duck confit; Jarret d’Agneau aux Petits Legumes et Couscous – braised lamb shank with vegetables and couscous.  Dessert selections are Assiette de Fromage – assorted cheese plate; Mousse au Chocolat  chocolate mousse; and Feuillantine des Fruits Rouges  mixed berries in pastry.

More Fried Food at 2017 State Fair of Texas

The fried-food contest that’s brought state-wide fame to many a contestant is making a big change. And why not? Everything’s big in Texas, including the Big Tex Choice Awards at the State Fair of Texas. In previous contests, two concession items were chosen winners: one for Best Taste and one for Most Creative. Now growing to include a third category as well as more finalists (expanding from 8 to 10), Lone Star State foodie fans and creators can partake of the delicious fried goodness that makes this contest the masterpiece that it is.

What Is A Dive Bar? + A Dozen Of Our Favorites

The web site The Best Colleges ran a list of the best dive bars in the country. You will be pleased to know Texas was represented twice, once in Austin for Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon, and the second is Dixie Chicken in College Station. By the way, Ginny’s wins our award for the worst web site design ever.

I haven’t been to either bar mentioned, but spent most of my time checking out the list of criteria to be on the list of the best dive bars. As one who takes great pride in hoisting a marginal beer in shady bars I took particular interest in what this web site felt made up a dive. I extracted some of the criteria from their list. Ten50 BBQ in Richardson is about to celebrate three years of smoke later this summer after already going through a series of makeovers, most notably the bar which is in sprite condition with its long row of stools ready to BBQ and beer its guests.

General BBQ wisdom sets sites on the pork ribs at Ten50, where they serve tender St Louis style which carries more meat-to-bone ratio than say baby backs, but with the same luster and bite. Hickory is the wood of choice, but we did spot a stack of post oak which is known for its long burning flavorful hard smoke.  Continue reading
