Gorditas are King at Gorditas

Gorditas, located at 10065 Harry Hines Blvd in Dallas, is exactly the kind of under-the-radar spot that feels deeply rooted and reliably real. It’s a no‑frills restaurant — a little box hidden in plain sight on a busy stretch of Harry Hines — but inside, the food moves with heart and a steady beat.

A True Gem, El Pocito in McAllen, TX

Located in a quiet alley between South 16th and 17th Streets in McAllen, Texas, lies a culinary gem known as El Pocito. This unassuming establishment, officially named The Tortilleria Factory, has been delighting taste buds for over a century. Worth a long journey for lunch? We think so.

El Pocito’s story begins in 1935, founded by Aurelio Balli Tijerina and Herminia Gonzalez Balli. The couple’s dedication to authentic Mexican cuisine led them to establish a tortilla factory that would become a cornerstone of the community. The name “El Pocito,” meaning “the little well,” evokes images of a humble wellspring—a fitting metaphor for the rich flavors and traditions flowing from this establishment.

With a name like Rainbow Ice Cream shop you might expect for them to serve large scoops of ice cream, probably in both cup and cone form, and most assuredly with choices of toppings. This little shop has that. But there is more. Owned by Mexican transplants, they offer up beautiful sliced fruits of all sorts, proudly displayed in a deli case. During our visit, patrons marched in proudly and snatched these cups of fruit up and sat down with their families to enjoy the healthy snack.    Continue reading

Taqueria Cristina Surprises The Hell Out Of Me

by Steven Doyle

I had to stop in Taqueria Cristina this week if for no other reason than to sample their black bean dip served with the complimentary chips and salsa. The chips are forgettable, but they are more than redeemed once you sample the very spicy and very smoky salsa; but oh that black bean dip. It is not thick or chunky, but instead smooth and velvety with a huge power punch of flavor.    Continue reading
