Ferris Wheelers A Fantastic Meat Ride

DSC02382by Steven Doyle

A serious player in the Dallas BBQ business recently popped up with Doug Pickering at the helm. You may recall Pickering from Work in Deep Ellum where he plied his trade well serving up turkey, sausages briskets and ribs, all the BBQ staples, but he has upped his game tremendously at Ferris Wheelers Backyard & BBQ where beer, BBQ and a 50 foot Ferris Wheel are the main attractions.  Continue reading

funny-gif-Popeye-meat-market

Tickets for the 8th Annual Meat Fight go on sale Tuesday, October 3rd at 10 a.m. Be sure to set a reminder, as tickets for the meaty charity event sold out last year in under one hour.

Meat Fight is a Texas barbecue competition with a tradition of awarding bronzed beer-can trophies and raising cash for the National MS Society. “This year, Meat Fight is going to be bigger than ever before,” says Alice Laussade, CEO of Meat Fight, Inc. “We’re featuring 20 of Dallas’ best chefs in the main fight, plus 9 more chefs in our beefy VIP Side Show competition—and we’re adding a whole new competition to the mix for all attendees. It’s called Sweet Fight. Our friends at Whole Foods are presenting that, and the category for competition this year is pie. It’s gonna be so great.” Continue reading

Meat Fight Rescue: 7 Meaty Alternatives

funny-gif-Popeye-meat-marketby Steven Doyle

Meat Fight is upon us, and it would seem every decent barbecue Generalísimo will be either working or judging the event this Sunday. You know you didn’t get a ticket, we didn’t either. Our fingers are just not fast enough to score a ticket as they sell out extremely fast. Regardless, it is a fantastic event that started as a small backyard brouhaha to raise a few bucks for National MS Society by the Observer James Beard award winning writer and Cheap Bastard, Alice Laussade. The event has raised $170,ooo since its grass roots inception for this cause. What makes Meat Fight even better is that 100% of funds raised goes to the MS research to eradicate the disease.

We know you are kicking yourself for not securing a ticket in a timely manner. Who wants to miss out on all that meatiness? We have some resolve for you. We have a list of what to do if you didn’t score a Meat Fight ticket.   Continue reading

fw burgerby Steven Doyle

May is National Burger Month and Del Frisco’s Grille celebrates with a burger of the month at each of their restaurants in the DFW area. All three locations in Uptown Dallas, Southlake Town Square and Fort Worth’s Sundance Square are participating with a unique burger specially created by their respective chefs.

First stop on the Del Frisco burger tour is the “Bass Fort Worth Chili Burger” which is featured at Del Frisco’s Grille Fort Worth in Sundance Square. This burger has a base of chili, bacon, beef, onions, and cheese. This burger is dedicated to the memory of Executive Chef Russ Huey and incorporates bread from Empire Bakery. Executive Chef Carter Reyenga said, “It is two American classics in one. Chili and a burger. Two prime beef patties topped with house ground prime chili that is slow braised with Bass beer. It is topped with shredded cheddar, diced onions and sloppy sauce. All fitting between a local brioche bun.”    Continue reading

Meat Fight Rescue

Meat Fight is upon us, and it would seem every decent barbecue  Generalísimo will be either working or judging the event. You know you didn’t get a ticket, we didn’t either. It is a fantastic event that started as a small backyard brouhaha to raise a few bucks for National MS Society by the Observer James Beard award winning writer and former Cheap Bastard, Alice Laussade. Last year the event came out of the closet and was opened to the public with rave reviews, including one from craveDFW.

My ticket last year fell onto my lap after a friend could not make the event. I was driving back into town from the Terlingua Chili Cookoff when the offer was made. I floored the gas pedal and made it back in time for the closing credits of the event but was still able to sample a few slices of brisket and a chunk of sausage made by Brian Luscher. I ate the flesh and it was good.

For those who were not fortunate enough to secure a ticket during the three minutes they were for sale, we have a few meat suggestions of our own. Laussade mentioned a few weeks back that if this event was as successful as she hopes (and it is already) that next year will be much larger and more inclusive.  Peruse our meat laden list below, and if you use any of the following ideas to pass the time your luckier friends are at Meat Fight, consider making a donation to the National MS Society. Karma will assist you next year.    Continue reading

Hold on to your pork butts, Dallas. Meat Fight®, a barbecue competition benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, will be held Sunday, Nov. 17 (5-8 p.m.) at Four Corners Brewery.

Meat Fight, the brainchild of James Beard Award Winner and Dallas Observer columnist, Alice Laussade, will bring together a dozen of Dallas’ best chefs to compete in four categories: brisket, ribs, sausage, and wild card.
