Meet the DirkWich

IMG_6614

Dallas loves Dirk Nowitzki, and so does Dallas-based Which Wich Superior Sandwiches. During his 20-years-and-counting career in Dallas, the German-born basketball star has brought both an NBA MVP award and an NBA championship to the city while becoming the 6th leading scorer in NBA history. Nowitzki has also made a positive impact in the community through the establishment of The Dirk Nowitzki Foundation, which helps provide education, health and well-being for children to enrich their lives and realize their dreams.

To celebrate and thank Nowitzki for the impact he has made on the Dallas area during his time as a member of the Mavericks, Dallas-based Which Wich is proud to announce a new line of “DirkWiches” for his 20th NBA season. These will be available only in Dallas area locations with a special #DirkWich brown bag and will be complemented by souvenir Dirk drink cups and special edition bags of “Dirk’s Chips.” Continue reading

The Meat Shop on Lovers Now Open

image1 (10)by Steven Doyle

Opened by the Sands family, the good people who owned the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek and part of the Hunt family ranch, Rosewood which raises amazing beef, The Meat Shop is now in soft opening stage (means ‘pardon our dust’ in resto language). Get a sneak peek in the early days of opening of this quaint butcher shop located at 4410 West Lovers Lane in Dallas.

My visit netted a deliciously in-house smoked pastrami sandwich that was cheesy, smoky and just downright amazing. They sell prepared foods such as sandwiches, smoked potato salad, twice baked potato, tomato jam and pimento cheese. There is also a large cooler case of beef from the ranch at spirited prices. Best Dallas Banh Mi Finds

banh miby Steven Doyle

The banh mi has become more popular in the past few years in Dallas. You see them on menus fused, and sometimes dazed and confused. The sandwich is a by-product of the French occupation of Vietnam, and starts with a wonderful baguette that displays an ever so crisp exterior, and a more inviting soft center. As for fillings, we often think grilled pork, and what a wondefful selection that can be. However, in Vietnam you might find a more interesting and broader choice of meats including Vietnamese sausage, roasted pork, spreadable pork liver pâté, grilled chicken, chicken floss, sardines in tomato sauce, soft pork meatballs in tomato sauce, head cheese, fried eggs, and tofu.

To top your sandwich, you might select fresh or pickled vegetables such as cucumber slices, cilantro, pickled carrots and daikon in shredded form. Common condiments include sriracha, sliced chilies, mayonnaise, and even cheese. Continue reading

The Original Muffuletta Is A Mere Seven Hour Drive Away

central groceryby Steven Doyle

Originating n New Orleans, the muffuletta is a sandwich that’s made on a round, disc-like sesame bread filled with cured meats, marinated olives, and pickled vegetables. Though you can buy a muffuletta at any number of places in the city, it all began at Central Grocery in the French Quarter, where it came about as a way for Sicilians to combine the separate ingredients of their meal.

Central Grocery, a great place for fine Italian goods, sells the muffuletta by the round ($17.95) or half-round ($9.50), both of which come in their signature white paper wrappers. Two very hungry eaters may easily  put away the whole round.    Continue reading

Dallas Gem: Great American Hero

great americanby Jennifer Thomas

What a treasured gem we have in the Great American Hero located at 4001 Lemmon Avenue in Dallas.  Serving since 1974 the Hero looks a bit worn, but that is due to the fact they have cranked out untold sandwiches to happy guests since before I was born.

Service is never lacking at Hero and there is always a line of employees to help your sandwich choice along. Often you will spot the owner who takes great pride in entertaining new guests as they enter the building. He awards newbies with a free fruit cup (yum) and regales his history with pride.     Continue reading

Prime Rib French Dip at Matchbox

prime-rib-french-dipby Farah Fleurima

With slices of Angus beef, plus caramelized onions, mozzarella and zippy horseradish mayo piled onto a French roll this meaty, melty sandwich tastes decadent in or out of its accompanying au jus sauce. And while it really shouldn’t cost the $18 you’ll be charged, I think it’s worthy of being indulged in every once in awhile alongside Matchbox’s excellent fries and a pint or two of local suds from the bar.   Continue reading

Ok, This Is My Favorite Sandwich (And I Have So Many Faves)

img_3605by Rhonda Dutton

I’m sure this is a common sentiment, but I only pay for sandwiches that I can’t make (just as well) at home. Based on this, I still have so many favorite sandwiches, I just love them all and don’t discriminate when my taste buds are happy.  Continue reading
