The Jellyfish Family Tree Part 7: Falkner’s Mercurial Fortunes

by Dr. Spin

Jason Falkner’s solo debut solidified him as a power pop icon in my book, and his relatively marginal status turned me into a staunch advocate of his work. It’s worth mentioning here that Falkner was also a contributing member of The Grays, and it was around this point in the timeline that I obtained my first copy of their singular release Ro Sham Bo. Creating a family tree based on the comings and goings of this power pop supergroup would also have some interesting results, but it would prohibitively widen the scope of this particular project. I have already dedicated a post to Ro Sham Bo that I am still quite fond of, but I think it would be irresponsible not to directly mention The Grays in any discussion related to Jellyfish and Jason Falkner. .find the fortune of mercurial at the pharmacy

Cafe Herrera Opens Feb 1

herreraby Steven Doyle

The Herrera’s restaurant of my youth seems distant. Long gone is the tiny adobe looking shack on Maple near Oak Lawn across from the Old Parkland Hospital where lines of hungry people sat on their ice chests full of beer waiting for one of the very few tables inside. These folks knew once they made it inside they would be slammed with an aroma of fresh enchiladas. If you were fortunate there would be a woman standing near the doorway stamping out fresh, thick tortillas, and with little coaxing she might hand you one with an adoring grin.  Continue reading →

Obzeet Is Relocating

obzeetby Steven Doyle

Have you been to Obzeet, the odd restaurant and bar that also sells exotic trinkets and patio accessories? They have one of the most interesting patios in Dallas that looks like a slice of the Caribbean replete with a pond and a tiki bar. This is also where you can find incredible live music in an area void of entertainment.   Continue reading →

Gallerie Noir Presents Stevie Tate’s Romance Of Art & Words

When a person thinks of an artist, they usually think of a struggling, starving artist.  This is not the case for all.  This week I had the pleasure of getting a sneak peek inside the upcoming exhibition for Gallerie Noir.  This particular show will feature the artistic explorations of Stevie Tate’s abstract paintings.

While in his studio, Tate gave me a preview of his exhibition “The Romance of Art and Words”.  He explained that we all have a story to tell regardless whether it’s told through words or movement and colors.  Tate is someone who spent seventeen years in a corporate setting, and found he no longer enjoyed his lifestyle.  With much contemplation he chose to leave that lifestyle behind.  Pursuing other opportunities which made him happier, he became an artist!   Continue reading →

ZestFest Blazes New Trails In Fiery Eating Madness

zestfest1by Jeanine Stevens

Each year I typically spend months working up to a few million Scoville units’ worth of packing heat.  Then the big survival test comes at ZestFest, the largest gathering of spicy foods and spicy foods aficionados of the year.  Aisle after aisle of hotness purveyors offered samples at the 10th annual expo, held this past weekend at the expansive Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas.  The choices were enough to satisfy any and all burning food desires.  Jolokia pepper salsas: check.  Habanero ketchups: check.  Atomic wing sauces: check.    Continue reading →

Observer’s Artopia Brought Fashion, Art And Music To Dallas Contemporary Museum

DSC05277by Erica Guajardo

As a past intern and a volunteer at the Dallas Contemporary Museum, it is always interesting to see what the current exhibitions will be used as a way to enhance events!  On Saturday, January 26, Artopia presented by Dallas Observer brought together some of the best culture, fashion, art, music, and food venues that Dallas has to offer.  One reason that the Dallas Contemporary Museum is a great place to host this event this year is because it recently just opened their new exhibition Dzine + Los Americanos.    Continue reading →
