Bolivia Shuns McDonalds

by Steven Doyle

What would happen if we all stopped eating Big Macs? One Latin American country knows: they close their doors and go away.

After a powerful struggle and a 14-year campaign McDonalds decided to call it quits citing poor sales and low margins in a restructuring plan over seven countries. The company shuttered eight Bolivian restaurants in the major cities of La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz de la Sierra at year’s end. The fast food giant is simply unable to succeed in nations where the masses decry poor quality and mass production. These people are actually living proof that slow food can work en masse.   Continue reading

Shop, Wine and Dine This Weekend

by Steven Doyle

We have a few shout outs for the weekend and think you might enjoy a few of these.  There are a few things going on that you might enjoy.

First let us mention that we saw Miguel Vicéns and John Paul Valverde owners of Campo Modern Country Bistro  last night and they wanted to let everyone know they do indeed have a liquor license. There were just a few days in the beginning that they did not have one, but now you can enjoy the cocktail program designed by Brad Hensarling of Fort Worth’s The Usual at the new Oak Cliff restaurant.

Saturday you can start your Christmas shopping by purchasing wares from local artisans at the Dallas Flea, the occasional market located in the Southside of Lamar at 1409 S. Lamar. Here you will find amazing clothing, jewelry, food and vintage wear all under one room and made by some super cool locals.   Continue reading

Celebrate National Pie Day(s): These Are A Few Of Our Favorite Pies

by Steven Doyle

There seems to be a dispute as to when National Pie Day is celebrated. We try to follow the food holidays as best and accurately as possible. One very reliable list marks today as pie day, and the Pie Council  (I guess there is a Pie Council) states that it is in January. We say why chance it and go with both. You can never be too handsome or have too much pie.

Let there be no doubt, we like pie.

We have known our fair share of great pies. We are not sure we can limit our pie fever to just five, and we are not quite sure we can do that, so we plan on name dropping a lot of pies out of our pie-hole.   Continue reading

Stalking Julie Powell Part Deux

by Steven Doyle

On slower days such as this we like to turn to Facebook for amusement. Nothing charms us more than a look-see through Julie Powell’s Facebook wall where she offers daily quips and anarchy. You may recall Powell from the book Julie and Julia, with the subsequent film of the same title.

She describes herself on Facebook as such: “I may be a narcissistic whore, a libidinous shrew, and a defiler of the institution of marriage, but other than that I’m really a very nice person.”

Stalk on with us as we filter through some of her updates.  Continue reading

Sky Fish to Open at Cityville

by Steven Doyle

We had a chance to speak with Kathleen Ellington of Kathleen’s Sky Diner this weekend and she said she is planning a new restaurant that should be ready in soon.  The Cityville Oak Park complex, which houses some very exquisite town homes, had been looking for a new restaurant to open on the street level and Ellington found the location too wonderful to pass up. Ellington said the new restaurant will be called Sky Fish in keeping with her astral theme.

“We will never duplicate the Sky Diner because it takes too much to reproduce.  We tried in Plano and found that it really takes ownership being there around the clock to function properly,” said Ellington.    Continue reading
