There’s Mercy For That Hangover

by Steven Doyle

There are a few side effects of racing through so many cocktails in the maddening attempt to find the perfect and most satisfying drink. Each week we throw on display some of the best cocktaliers Dallas has to offer. This week it was Lucky’s libations over at the new Chesterfield, the week before it was Matt’s at Tate’s on McKinney. Coming up next we will be sampling the drinks at Oak and the yet-to-open Standard Pour. There is always a new drink to sip, and to be perfectly honest, I like it that way.

But that damned side effect — the hangover. It can often lie in wait, making you suffer through your day in regret.    Continue reading

Watch Top Chef With a Top Chef, a Barman and a Guy Named Tito

by Steven Doyle     photos by Bryan Coonrod

Last night was a busy yet blustery evening. Many lounges and restaurants were suffering due to high winds, a drastic drop in temperature and sparse rain. We officially accept the fact this is Fall. The change of seasons brings with it many new invigorating experiences. The cool weather, a change in menus for many bars and restaurants, and the new season of Top Chef that aired last night on Bravo. We couldn’t think of a better place to be than at Private Social, the fresh digs of our very own Top Chef, Tiffany Derry.     Continue reading

828 Opens With a Splash

Brian McCullough and Michael Martensen

by Steven Doyle

Last evening we popped into 828, the pop-up speakeasy in Oak Cliff that benefit’s the Promise House, and found a whole host of DFW cocktail legends behind and in front of the bar.

The brainchild of Michael Martensen and Eddie “Lucky” Campbell who will soon open their own bar tentatively entitled Rock and Rye, are using the lounge as a launch pad for the bar and to raise funds for the charity.   Continue reading

Drink of the Week: Marquee

by Steven Doyle

We sauntered into the sexy surroundings of Highland Park Village’s Marquee Grill and Bar last night in search of a fantastic cocktail and entered the realm of celeb bartender Jason Kosmas who is the beverage director of the restaurant, only to find he has slipped away on vacation.

This did not deter our thirsty selves, so we quickly bellied up to the bar where we ordered. And for good measure, ordered again.   Continue reading

Drink of the Week: Redfork

by Steven Doyle

The staff is not sure if you are aware of this, but we really do beat the streets in search of interesting items for craveDFW and often this means having a few cocktails. Last night was certainly no different than any other night and we found ourselves looking for a good drink.

Starting in Uptown I found a group of friends who had been communing with cocktails for an extended happy hour. As you may already know, it isn’t much fun joining a table that has a few hours head start to their evening. They tend to be easily excitable but always friendly. Lots of huggin’, so that couldn’t be too bad.  Continue reading

Drink of the Week: Twisted Root Whiskey Float

by Steven Doyle

As we search the city for the next best cocktail it may be important to note that we can find these in the most unusual places. This week certainly helps ring true to that statement as we looked in on a local burger restaurant after hearing so many great things about a few of the drinks being concocted without us.

Never one to miss out on a good thing we headed over to the SMU location of Twisted Root, certainly the most unpretentious spot to have a good drink. Besides burgers, fries and some amazing pickles, we recently named Twisted Root as having one of the best hot dogs  in Dallas. Not because they have ultra-cool buns or intriguing meats like kobe or even pygmy marmoset. No, we loved ‘em because they’re deep fried before the brazen bun insertion.  Continue reading
