Look at these pictures. Just look at them. They say a picture is worth a thousands words but in the case of Velvet Taco only 6 are needed: Best.Gourmet.Tacos.In.Dallas.Period.
Velvet Taco has only been open a few short weeks in Dallas, located in the old Church’s Chicken on Henderson and 75 but is already making major waves in Dallas’ emerging Gourmet Taco scene. With over 20 different tacos on the menu broken down in to 6 categories (chicken, veggie, pork, beef, fish, and egg) and an emphasis on fresh, local produce these tacos are have been hand crafted from the tortilla up. In fact, all of the tortillas at Velvet Taco are hand made in house. Continue reading

A couple weeks ago, Vegan Girl got my taste buds a-tingling with her review of Baboush, the new Moroccan & Eastern Mediterranean restaurant in West Village. Everything sounded so fresh and delicious that I had to try it for myself, but also venture into territory that might make Vegan Girl hate me—the meaty side of the menu.
First of all, the tiny space accomplishes exactly what owners Sam and Yaser intended: to create a bit of what they call “Arabian Nights” romance in the heart of Dallas. Face away from the windows and all the shirtless frat boys heading out for their evening run and look toward the bar, and it truly does feel like you’re in a different world. Stunning fabrics adorn the walls, ornate tufted stools surround the center tables, and gorgeous lanterns hang from overhead.
The soundtrack of Moroccan and Eastern Mediterranean tunes is a nice touch, especially when a cover of R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion” wafts softly from the speakers with an unexpected sitar accompaniment. Very nice indeed. Continue reading

As part of our incredible week we had an opportunity to dine with chef David Anthony Temple (DAT) at his latest underground dinner. Last evening DAT featured freshly flown in seafood from Hawaii and it was so beautiful we decided to break out into song.
Notice DAT had dessert assistance by none other than Dude, Sweet Chocolate Katherine Clapner. Continue reading

We just received an email from our favorite underground chef who was explaining he had a few last minute cancellations for his underground sushi dinner extravaganza that will be hosted “somewhere in Deep Ellum” tonight. Because he loves craveDFW so much he sent this beautiful offer:
I am offering $20 off to anyone that RSVP’s and mentions craveDFW today. Tonight’s menu is a 6-course tasting menu of fish caught yesterday in Hawaii and hitting the plates tonight in Dallas (about 27 hrs out of the water). This list includes: Kajiki, Hamachi, Walu, and Ahi. To RSVP for this $70/person(cash only) + gratuity dinner in Deep Ellum (and receive a $20 discount) email dat@chefdat.com. Also the big bonus is that tonight’s dessert is being prepared by Katherine Clapner of Dude, Sweet Chocolate.
Remember, these dinners are BYOB, so that is an extra bonus for a great date tonight. We have been to a few of these DAT dinners and they are really special. And a Clapner dessert to boot? Go get ‘em!

Rohst, the new Korean-style restaurant on Greenville Avenue has opened its doors, even if it was quietly allowing the staff to shake out any kinks in service before making an official announcement.
The new building that was in the former Terilli’s location has risen from its ashes and made way for a beautiful new structure that although new blends well with the neighborhood. You may find several nods to the past in the Greenville Avenue Bar and Grill sign planted in front of Rhost, and many photos from the past inside the new restaurant.
Rohst is clean, sleek and inviting inside with a mezzanine level that seats 85 and a rooftop bar that can hold upwards to 100 with a total seating capacity of 400. Continue reading
