We Are Celebrating Chicken Fried Steak Day!

Raven’s Grille at Texas Star

by Steven Doyle

Today is a day of celebration and joy as we mark the very first official Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day. The day’s founder, Jeffrey Yarbrough, said today on this auspicious occasion, “I am honored to have worked closely with restaurateurs Tom Perini and Ralph Sheffield to elevate this savory southern dish that reflects our state history. Besides my wife and kids as the loves of my life, creating the official Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day has been a dream come true and makes me so proud to be a Texan.”

We detailed the storied history of the special occasion yesterday and today we offer a few sizzling hot CFS specials, plus our personal recommendations for a really fine version in the DFW area. With that, go out and enjoy chicken fried steak today and celebrate with us. Please share your favorites not listed.       Continue reading

Get Ready! Tomorrow is Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day

by Steven Lindsey      photo by Steven Doyle

It’s that magical time of year when children make their wish lists, special outfits are purchased in anticipation, and grown men dream of country gravy. Yes, it’s beginning to look a lot like Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day, the one day a year when being naughty is oh-so-nice.

If you’ve never heard of Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day, don’t worry. This is the first official year of the esteemed official recognition. Spearheaded by Jeffrey Yarbrough, CEO of bigInk PR and Marketing, the hope of putting one of the Lone Star State’s most iconic meals on a pedestal became reality when State Representative Ralph Sheffield, Speaker of the House Joe Straus, and Chief Clerk Robert Haney signed the resolution on May 30, 2011.    Continue reading

Last Week For a Fletcher’s Corny Dog!

by Steven Doyle

As the Texas State Fair continues in its final full week we felt it time to actually try a few Fair staples and venture out onto the Midway with a loosened belt. No visit to the Fair is complete without a visit to Fletcher’s Corny Dogs. We searched around for Gregory True, the manager of the large Fletcher stand that sits perched next to Big Tex, but we were told the 18 year veteran of the Fair was hospitalized and missed the Fair this year.     Continue reading

Free Carl’s Jr Burger For You

by Steven Doyle

Have you had a Carl’s Jr. burger yet? From all accounts it is a pretty good burger for fast food. The chain is celebrating its 50th restaurant opening with a free burger, but the trick is you need to find them.

Certainly Carl’s has a few locations across Dallas, one on Lemmon and the newest location on I30 in Garland, but to grab a free burger you will need to follow their food truck.    Continue reading

New State Fair Vendors Due to Deadline Confusion

by Steven Doyle

There are a few changes with the food this year at the Texas State Fair. Sure you will find all the new fried foods and familiar faces and corn dogs, but a few tried and true food vendors were replaced this year for the odd reason that the deadlines were confusing leaving a few out of the game this year.

With that said, this left the door open for new vendors to take their places and we have the short list.     Continue reading

Dallas Diva Does Fashion Week

by Farah Fleurima

Fashion’s Night Out, Thursday night’s kickoff to New York Fashion Week, had the city’s top fashion destinations buzzing with parties galore — to say that it was a blast is seriously understating things. Here, my exploits for the evening.

I started off at Galleria Dallas, following my own FNO itinerary and checking out the happy hour at Banana Republic. Guess I can call it a “so-called” happy hour — the store’s version of happy meant 40 percent off most merchandise, which is great, but … where’s the OBS (open bar situation), yo? On to the next. My partier in crime Dimples and I wanted to find the Fashionistas’ champagne lounge.     Continue reading

Texas Rangers Eat Octopus Balls

By Steven Doyle

Reality television is all around Dallas. It’s hard to make a turn in a Dallas night club without bumping into the latest film crew. That is why we were a bit perplexed to hear a crew was filming at TJ’s Seafood Market on Preston Road today.

As it turns out a crew from Japan is in town filming a set on two Texas Ranger players who are from Japan. There pitchers Koji Uehara and Yoshinori Tateyama are legends and the Osaka film crew are in Dallas to pay homage to the players.  Continue reading

Fair Fries Flapjacks

by Crave Staff

For many the Texas State Fair means a large variety of music, pie baking contests, and bragging rights for the rancher with the largest hog. These are traditional fair-going events that have brought generations together since 1886.

Most who have visited the largest party in Texas are familiar with the sights and sounds of the Midway that is greeted by the 52 foot cowboy loved by all called Big Tex. Tex wasn’t always employed by the State, but was born and raised in Kerens, Texas and made to shill the Christmas holiday for the small Texas town dressed as Santa. It took local luminary R.L. Thorton to convince the tall Texan to move to Dallas and the Texas giant hasn’t looked back since.  Continue reading
