A Tale of Tacos, BBQ & Beer

by Steven Doyle

A friend of mine who is working on his first entry into the restaurant world called me up to chat about his concept and asked if I was interested in grabbing a few tacos. I am always up for tacos and was curious as to which he would choose, especially since we will be examining tacos with our People’s Choice Award all week long.

Seems the friend was reading Cheap Bastard over at the Observer written by James Beard nominated Alice Laussade and admitted he read her religiously. Earlier this week Miss Bastard did a write up on an Oak Cliff taqueria called Cool & Hot off Eighth Street and I-35 in a converted Gulf station, and in her story she insisted my friend check the place out. I admit, I was a bit curious as well. I thought I had hit most taco stands in Dallas but this one escaped me somehow.  Continue reading

DFW Peoples Choice Awards: Best Taco

by Crave Staff

At the home offices of craveDFW we love our tacos, and we know Dallas loves a good taco as well. The fastest growing segment in the local restaurant industry must assuredly include the word ‘taco’ or ‘taqueria’ in their name.

We were the driving force behind the Dallas Taco Tour and we certainly have our opinion of who makes the best taco, be it al pastor, lengua, barbacoa, carnita or a simple breakfast taco. What we want to know at Crave is what is your favorite?  Continue reading

Facebook of the Semi-Famous

by Steven Doyle

For those that know me well understand that I spend an inordinate amount of time on Facebook when I probably should be working. I do not watch television ever, so it relaxes me, plus I get some decent information from a variety of people.

I started reading the Facebook wall of Julie Powell, a Texan that now resides in New York City and is the author of Julie & Julia that was later made into a motion picture. For those living in Oklahoma, Powell used Julia Child‘s cookery book Mastering the Art of French Cooking as a basis for a blog and spent an entire year making every recipe listed.

Since the movie, Powell has written another book called Cleaving: a Story of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession, which details her love for butchering and also her affair.  Continue reading

Fruitealicious Hard Serves the Tunes

Last Saturday the best place to beat the summer heat was Frutealicious in Carrolton. They kicked the summer off with an assortment of local bands and cold drinks. Indie hip-hop group, Josephine Versus Black Jesus, played for a surprisingly large crowd of people as more waited outside. Their set suffered a few technical difficulties, but still sounded great and the crowd was more than receptive to their jams.  This night was also the demo-release party for local punk band, Something Social. They did a great job of getting the crowd excited Continue reading

New Location for Taco Guero

by Steven Doyle

Our eagle-eyed legal friend Michael Hubbard (you may know his delightful wife  Margie of Dallas Eats fame) has spotted a new restaurant in Dallas and this is a place we can all rally around. If you recall our Taco Tour  some months back, many of us touring felt the best taco in Dallas comes from Taco Guero. Now find a new location for the tiny taco stand.  Continue reading

State of the Dog Report

by Steven Doyle

Last evening some of the guys from the crave office, including one Mr. David Donalson who scored tickets for us,  decided to make a pilgrimage to the Ballpark at Arlington to take in America’s Pastime and soak up a few rays of sun among the beating crowd of thousands. This would be a culinary night off, and we resisted all temptation to speak to people about anything besides beer or baseball.

As we made our way into the park we made way to the closest Beer Of The World booths that sell the better beers for 9 bucks for 24 ounce draft. This may seem like a tidy sum of loot for a draft beer at a ball park, but we are often reminded of one ill-fated summer when the Cleveland Indians played the Texas Rangers deciding to offer ten cent beer June 4th, 1974.  Jump for this one, it’s a doozy.  Continue reading

Soft Drink Pairings at Burger King: Contest

by Crave Staff

We don’t even know what to say about this.  Sure, something sarcastic would be fun.  How about you write the caption.  All entries go into our magic hat for a prize drawing.  We will announce the winner here tomorrow afternoon.  The prize will be better than a BK Veggie Burger paired with a Diet Coke.

The Modern Golden Rule

Toni

My fiancé and I are getting married in less than a month.  Normally, we mess around a little before we go to bed, but lately he started bringing sex toys (nipple clamps) into the mix.  I’m a virgin and he’s not, so this kind of thing bothers me a bit.  I’m not a prude, but at the same time I’m just not ready to do certain things when we haven’t even had sex yet.  Maybe once we do, I’ll feel comfortable enough to experiment, but right now I’m not.  I’m starting to think there’s another sexual side to him that I don’t know about.  How do I handle this before I say, “I do?
