Dallas Tomato Battle

by Steven Doyle

Back in the 1980’s there was an epic food fight between Colorado and Texas in Twin Lakes, Colorado 140 miles southwest of Denver as a way to vent about Texans vacationing in Colorado. The weapons were truckloads of rotten tomatoes.

The battle grew each year, bringing tourists in much like the Spanish La Tomatina festival in Bunol. The fun was eventually stopped in the early 90’s when the insurance premium rocketed.     Continue reading

New Cocktail Menu at Marquee

by Steven Doyle

We absolutely love the change of seasons, and not for all the obvious reasons. We crave the new menus chefs roll out, and now in this fresh era of great cocktails we are now seeing barmen offering new cocktails to pair with the seasons. A few nights ago we caught wind of just such a new menu at Marquee, located in Highland Park Village, where we found manager Jason Kosmas affixing last minute adjustments to his new bar menu that quietly was installed just yesterday.

“Basically we re-worked our cocktail menu for the Fall season. We are switching up the format a bit and expanding the amount of cocktails we offer. The first page of the menu you will find pre-dinner or aperitif cocktails. You will find them a little bit more boozy, a little bit more layered and spirit-driven, explained Kosmas.   Continue reading

Chefs Without Borders

by Steven Lindsey

What could be more exciting than spending a romantic weekend in Cabo San Lucas with Chef Kent Rathbun? OK, I should probably clarify. Rathbun will be there, but not for the romantic part. Unless you consider savoring his tasty morsels an act of seduction. (Nobody’s here to judge.)

Last week, diners got a preview of a chef-swap partnership between Rathbun and Chef Marco Bustamante from Capella Pedregal one of the most luxurious resorts in all of Mexico. Together, the chefs prepared an incredible five-course dinner filled with amazing flavors like “Crema de Elote” (cream of corn) with Peekytoe crab.     Continue reading

Zombies Take Deep Ellum

by Steven Doyle            photos by Nick Bostick

As we fast approach Día de los Muertos, the zombies are becoming ever more restless in their fight to stave off their thirst for blood. To quell the search for fresh meat, organizers closed off streets in Deep Ellum this past weekend for a chance to celebrate with food, music and to donate precious blood for Carter Blood Care at the annual Zombie Walk.              Continue reading

Four Lounge Keith LaBonte Mixes It Up

by Steven Doyle

Last night we ventured into Four Lounge to visit with barman and proprietor Keith LaBonte. For those that have not yet made their way into the State and Allen lounge, you are missing one of the better cocktails made in the city.

Plenty of props to Lucky, Martensen, Jason and the rest, LaBonte is first to acknowledge that their skills are top-notch. However, LaBonte will note that his style of mixing is polar opposite of the sweeping Prohibition-style cocktail that you will find at Cedars Social or even the new pop-up bar that is opening tonight called 828.                                 Continue reading

Couple Lost in Corn Maze

by Steven Doyle

Last Monday while most of the country was happily celebrating Columbus Day a young couple and their 3-month old child entered a corn maze  for their first family on a farm just outside of Boston.

The family entered the maze Monday afternoon and later that evening the family was still wandering the maze, scared, hungry and bitten by mosquitoes so they finally decided to call 911 an hour after the maze had closed for the day.  Continue reading
