The Crazy Kolache Lady of Calvert

By Babs Hogan

Drivers are concerned about two things as they approach Calvert, Texas. The first is the speed trap within a mile of the city limits. Second, the mid-town traffic light, which seems to favor red. Frequent travelers on Highway 6 can be lulled as they pass decrepit barns, dry cotton fields, and rusted gates. Unless shopping for western-style furniture, decorative art, or rare antiques are on your list, it’s easy to drift through this four-block town without blinking. But that would be a mistake.    Continue reading

DIFFA’s Burgers and Burgundy at One Arts Plaza

by David Donalson

Burgundy… Chardonnay and Pinot Noir never had it so well as when it is grown here. I have had many different Chardonnays and Pinots and there is just something magical about the wines coming from this area. There was no way a little rain was going to hold me back from going to the DIFFA Burger and Burgundy event hosted by Chef John Tesar at One Arts Plaza.

As it turns out, the rain listened to my pleas for calm and the event was able to be held outside in really pleasant weather. After checking in and receiving a glass to hold my Burgundy, it was time to eat and drink. I had to pass on the creations of Michael Martensen and Lucky Campbell, though I did hear they were delicious, in order to find my first taste of Burgundy.

I found the 2009 Louis Latour sitting next to the grill of Tim Byres, who had a duck burger topped with duck pastrami. I could have just eaten that duck pastrami with the wine and been in heaven. The wine had a bit higher acidity that really melted with the duck fat. Great way to start!   Continue reading

Meet Pizza Virtuoso Dino Santonicola

by Steven Doyle

There is a growing movement of pizza in the DFW area and Cane Rosso is on the forefront blazing trails. Recently owner Jay Jerrier made a few changes to his restaurant, and some of them were not exactly on the menu. Less that two weeks ago Jay hired one of the most noted pizza makers in the United States named Dino Santonicola. We caught up with Dino recently to ask him a few questions.

In speaking with Dino we enjoyed his over-the-top accent and his love of pizza. Read on to see what changes he has made to Cane Rosso and what ingredients should not be on a good pizza.     Continue reading

Vegan Girl Goes Taco Truck

by Melissa Brenner

So, if you’re new or haven’t been reading my articles, you may not know that I’m a big out on the town getting my drink on fan. It’s great to be out with your friends enjoying the scene, people watching and being silly especially when the weather is as nice as it has been the past few weeks. Vegans do this, just like the omnis.

Most of my crew is a mixed bag of vegans, veggies and omnis; although I do have one or two meatatarians (seriously….they don’t eat veggies or fruit. No, I don’t know how they have survived this long, but I do know they have some serious health issues even though they are 10 years younger than me).   Continue reading

Hennessy Throwdown

by Farah Fleurima

Last night I attended an invite-only bash thrown by Hennessy to celebrate its limited-edition bottles designed by NYC artist KAWS. It took place at my favorite downtown party venue, the PM Gallery, and the scene was funky. The walls were emblazoned with snippets of KAWS’ bottle art and a display of the special containers anchored the room.

Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam at the Fair

by Steven Doyle

With the first full weekend of the Texas State Fair behind us today brings a bit of whimsy in the Creative Arts Building as we celebrate everything made with Spam.  Considered by most one the more unusual and most exciting food events at the Fair outside the traditional pie contest.

We stopped by this morning to visit the Spammers as they rolled out a large variety of Spam dishes, including an Eggs Benedict, tacos and a whole host of pastries.   Continue reading
