We normally do not discuss chain restaurants and fast food, but this looks like it will be a nice option for those on the run. Pollo Tropical is making its way to Dallas by year’s end, and with it will come plenty of healthy food options such as wraps, vegetable bowls and even some delicious sounding takes on yucca and plaintains. First Look: HG Sply Co.
HG Sply Co. opens for dinner service beginning tomorrow, May 21, 2013, and Dallas will finally get a taste of Paleo. After sampling several of the dishes during pre-opening festivities the word ‘diet’ should hardly come into play. The restaurant is made up of ingredients that have actually been hunted and gathered from neighboring farms and ranches, a practice performed by many new, up and coming restaurants in our area.
The restaurant takes advantage of the original charm of the building after having stripped away the sheetrock and years of abuse, exposing a beautiful and rugged patina. Continue reading

First Look: Pozo Mercado
Tonight Pozo Mercado opens its doors to entertain the dining and sipping set on McKinney Avenue. The new venture from La Reve, the same folks who run Sfuzzi and Standard Pour, has some really nice Mexican food set in the gorgeous old house that was formerly St John’s Wood. And late at night they rock that house with cool tunes and superb cocktails.
When looking to the cocktail menu, think Bryan McCullough from Standard Pour which is situated exactly next door to Pozo. As president of the Bartender’s Guild, he is one of the most respected and talented cocktailers in Dallas. Some amazing drinks are being poured at Pozo, along with a boozy flight of frozen drinks that are every bit as creamy as they are dreamy. Normally we would abstain from frozen drinks due to their inane ability to cause brain breeze, but also for their undesired lack of alcohol. Not the case here. Proceed with caution. Continue reading

HG Sply Co. Opens Next Tuesday
by Jennifer Thomas photos by Joy Zhang
HG Sply Co., located at 2008 Greenville Ave in Dallas, will open to the public on Tuesday, May 21st. HG Sply Co, created by Elias Pope and his partners Gus Antos, Mark Zahem, Neville Govender, is a neighborhood grill and bar that was influenced by the “back to basics” philosophy of the Paleo diet. “It’s simple,” explains owner Elias Pope, “80% fresh, flavorful food that fuels your day and 20% indulgent ‘cheat day’ food for days that you want to splurge.”
All menu items are natural and/or organic and local when possible, but always from small producing American ranchers. The chicken is from Windy Meadows (Campbell, Texas), the eggs are from Vital Farms (Austin, Texas); several of the meats are from Local Yocal (McKinney, Texas) or Broken Arrow Ranch (Ingram, Texas) with vegetables and fruits coming from a number of local farmers including Amelia Farms (Bells, Texas) and more. A specially made 8-seed bread will be delivered fresh daily from Esmeralda’s Bakery in North Dallas. Continue reading
