Brian Wilson’s Return to the Beach Boys: The Big “What If?”

by Dr. Spin

I like and respect The Beach Boys, but without Brian Wilson as the primary creative force behind the group, I am a lukewarm fan at best.  Without his vision, variously fractured lineups have danced precariously on the edge of becoming cruise ship lounge versions of the band, offering up very little more than paint-by-number versions of the songs that once defined them. Under normal circumstances I would not have given a 2012 release by the group much notice.  Notice more at the Pharmacy…

First Look: Wicked Po Boys

by Steven Doyle

Something wicked this way comes.  We sat down with the owners of the Wicked Po Boys, Joey Le and Lan Chi Le. The couple soft opened the new restaurant today and will officially open with a full swing tomorrow (Wednesday, June 26, 2012).

The pair are definitely NOLAphiles and appreciate the intricacies of the food found in the Big Easy. We did all the press release fun yesterday, but today we went in for a First Look and have plenty of food photos and a fun Q&A with the owners.  Continue reading

Fuel City Is Celebrating With Dollar Tacos

by Steven Doyle

Fuel City is celebrating their alliance and rebranding to the Gulf brand of fuel and is offering buck tacos until midnight tonight — today only. We did a full story on the history of Fuel City and its owner John Benda last September and it makes a pretty good read for those interested in a slice of Dallas history. Check that story out and then go grab some pretty damned good tacos for a dollar.

Second Thought Theatre Presents Bomb-itty of Errors

by Brin Martin

Second Thought Theatre is thrilled to present The Bomb-itty of Errors, the final show in its eight season, at Bryant Hall on the Kalita Humphreys Campus.  Amy Corcoran, making her STT debut, will direct this hip-hop retelling of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors.

“The Bomb-itty of Errors is a completely fresh and energized retelling of Shakespeare’s first comedy,” says Corcoran.  “Although the story seems familiar, this telling is unbelievably witty and quick.  Second Thought is the perfect theatre in Dallas to premiere this production because of their willingness and want to think outside the traditional theatre “box”.           Continue reading

Matador Tapas Closed

by Steven Doyle

Matador Tapas in December to mixed reviews has shuttered. Half price Tuesdays and Groupon couldn’t save the fledgling restaurant. We will miss the stuffed piquillo peppers. Matador was located at 1906 Greenville Avenue in Dallas.

Nova’s New Menu Dressed To Impress

by Steven Doyle

It has been a while since we dined at Oak Cliff’s Nova where chef Ian Tate has created a new summer menu to reflect on available meats and produce. Nova is known for its late night pizza and powerful cocktails, but for many it is also a great brunch and dinner spot.

Last night we were looking to try the new dishes that chef Tate has come up with. The chef has a large Louisiana influence and it reflects sometimes in his dishes. This means bold flavors and rich plates such as his crab claw appetizer, but the chef also has a light touch in other offerings such as his new ham and fresh peach pizza.    Continue reading
