First Chinese BBQ Roasted Duck For Christmas

Through out Chinese history you will find notable recipes, poetry and even songs extolling the virtues of the tasty duck. The most popular treatment is by far the Peking Duck, one of Kissinger’s favorite and is said to have brought together our two countries during the 70’s Nixon visits.

Now considered a national dish, the Chinese roasted duck can be found almost everywhere. The best versions are most assuredly found where you may view the carcasses in their full splendor, and one of our very favorites can be tasted at First Chinese BBQ.   Continue reading

Hot Pots, Shrimp Balls and Mary at Caravelle

We drove through Chinatown in Richardson this week in search of something particular, but the restaurant we were looking for was a mob scene. So we carefully summoned past memories of all the many choices of restaurants in the plaza and decided on Caravelle which has a focus on Vietnamese and Chinese dishes.

You can certainly find a worthy bowl of pho on the menu, but was looking for something a bit different. For a soup we ordered a combination hot pot which would encompass many of the seafood items they offer, but we were being waited on by the most entertaining Mary, who is also a manager at the restaurant, and she directed us to the catfish hot pot.  She said it was much more authentic, and we are a sucker for that phrase.   Continue reading

Dim Sum Of This At Kirin Court

What might possibly be the Chinese version of tapas, dim sum is more than just a meal. It is a gathering and a ritual. Dim sum is as casual as it is formal.

For the uninitiated, dim sum is an assortment of steamed vegetables and dumplings, roasted meats, soups, noodle rolls, baked goods and tarts. Actually so much more hopefully. All the food items are presented in groups of threes in tiny steamer baskets made of bamboo or steel and hand selected based on the groups desires and shared communally with plenty of hot tea and lively conversation.               Continue reading

Shady’s Burger Joint To Open Next Week In Richardson

Shady’s Burger Joint is opening next week in Richardson just a few doors down from one of our favorite hidden ice creameries, Sweet Firefly, which is located on Custer. The new restaurant  will feature hand-formed certified angus beef patties on an eclectic menu of unique, locally crafted specialty burgers and sandwiches made fresh to order. Shady’s General Manager, Chris Harrelson, hopes the burger joint will become a gathering place for the neighborhood and beyond.    Continue reading

Wicked Po Boys To Open Second Location

Husband and wife team Chi and Joey Le, owners of Wicked Po Boys in Richardson announced today that they plan to open a second location in Preston Center in Park Cities. The new location is close to Hopdoddy which just opened earlier this month. CraveDFW filed a report on the opening of the original Wicked location. You can pop onto the wayback machine for a look at what this restaurant is all about.

Wicked Po’Boys menu includes a “Gulf” section of po’boys like the crawfish etouffee smothered on fried crawfish, BBQ shrimp, fried shrimp and crispy soft shell crab recipes. Their “Inland” selection includes tofu, roast beef & gravy, Patton’s hot sausage n’ cheese po’boys and more.  With the menu also including gumbo, crawfish etouffee, raw and ridiculously charred oysters, sides like Cajun house chips and dirty fries with roast beef, gravy and cheese, Wicked Po’boys honors the spirit of New Orleans by bringing a taste of the culture to Dallas.  Continue reading

Monster Yogurt Opening In Richardson

Monster Yogurt which has a location in Casa Linda in east Dallas just signed a lease for a new location in Richardson. The 1,900 square foot location is located at Coit and Campbell roads and will feature 80 flavors of frozen yogurt and the Cave playground for the kiddos.

It’s scary and just in time for Halloween.

Two New Locations For Pearl Cup Announced

The highly regarded local specialty coffee shop, Pearl Cup Coffee, has announced it’s newest location at 2701 Custer Pkwy, Suite 917 in the II Creeks shopping center in Richardson. The II Creeks shopping center is a neighborhood supported location and home of Richardson Community Theatre, as well as wonderful restaurants and fitness centric businesses. In addition to their award winning coffee, the location will also sell beer and wine, and their expansive patio will be the centerpiece.
