Wachu Tacobot Willis: Fuel City

by Danielle Leahy     photos by Jacque Manaugh

If Dallas street taco lover’s had a Mecca, Fuel City  would be it. Even for all the naysayer’s at trip, at the least, is a requirement to judge the state of taco affairs in our City. Fuel City has long been called Dallas Best Street Tacos and, for the most part, started the gas station taco trend in Dallas as we know it. But what’s beyond the hype? Are the tacos really that good? Well with the all new covered patio  in place that seats 70 the Tacobots decided to invade the parking-lot and find out the truth for themselves.

First, you should know about Fuel City is it is cash only so don’t get in line (and yes there is ALWAYS a line) before you visit the ATM located just a few feet down from the outside window.     Continue reading

Coffee House Cafe Now Open Evenings

by Steven Doyle       photos by Robert Bostick

It has been four months since we first discovered the new Coffee House Café  located at 6150 Frankford off Preston in Dallas. Since then the coffee house has experienced some growth and major success in their outpost in far North Dallas. Single mom and first time restaurant owner Carrie Kelleher stays very busy attending to the daily operations to keep the successful momentum rolling.

When Kelleher first opened she was determined to stay a breakfast and lunch spot. This worked fairly successfully and she was pleased with the hours since she has two young ones to tend to in the evenings. But her customers were a bit more demanding. They wanted dinner service. They wanted a place to hang out and do their work, converse with friends and generally relax.         Continue reading

Celebrate National Pie Day(s): These Are A Few Of Our Favorite Pies

by Steven Doyle

There seems to be a dispute as to when National Pie Day is celebrated. We try to follow the food holidays as best and accurately as possible. One very reliable list marks today as pie day, and the Pie Council  (I guess there is a Pie Council) states that it is in January. We say why chance it and go with both. You can never be too handsome or have too much pie.

Let there be no doubt, we like pie.

We have known our fair share of great pies. We are not sure we can limit our pie fever to just five, and we are not quite sure we can do that, so we plan on name dropping a lot of pies out of our pie-hole.   Continue reading

Make-A-Wish Truffle Dinner

by Steven Doyle

Last evening we were invited guests at a very special white truffle dinner hosted by the Make-a-Wish Foundation at La Fiorentina. The night promised a magical meal prepared by the chefs at the Lombardi family restaurant, but the evening was more about children that could not be with us that evening.

You are no doubt familiar with the legendary organization, Make-a-Wish. Over the years they have fulfilled thousands of dreams (215,139 to date) of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Each wish costs an average of $7,000 and last night they raised at least that much in a live auction, proceeds from the dinner, and a very generous donation by the Lombardi family.   Continue reading

New Name For La Fiorentina, Now More Casual

by Steven Doyle    photos by Joy Jangles

Checking out La Fiorentina Tuscan Steakhouse this week we noticed a bit of a change. First, Alberto Lombardi has altered the name a bit to La Fiorentina Tuscan Grill. This seemed a bit curious until we spied the menu which has also undergone a few changes. Most notably prices.    Continue reading
