Dallas’ first ramen restaurant, Tanoshii Ramen + Bar, located in historic Deep Ellum, has significantly changed its menus.  The new lunch, dinner and late-night menus have launched and are fully in place this week.

Co-owner Chi Le says, “ We have grown a lot since we first opened, and now that we have more experience under our belt, we developed dishes that are more creative and elevated while still preserving classic Japanese ramen culture.  Joey and I, along with our staff, will continue to evolve and push ourselves to be better.”     Continue reading

CrushCraft Thai Street Eats Delivers Flavor

DSC00997by Steven Doyle

Chef Paul Singhapong is well known in Dallas for his time at Crescent Court Hotel’s Beau-Nash or perhaps more recently at Cru Wine Bar as opening executive chef. For craveDFW readers you might recall a handful of evenings where he delighted the city with a special Thai menu at Malai Kitchen in the West Village. Singhapong’s resume is rock solid and includes stints at the French Room, the Melrose Hotel and the Mansion on Turtle Creek working with the very best Dallas has to offer.  When we spoke to Sinhapong last year he indicated he was retired, but indeed he now is enjoying his new restaurant CrushCraft Thai Street Eats, which opened for business just a few short months ago.   Continue reading

April Food’s Day

bitterby Steven Doyle

April Fools Day has a marvelous history in food. Think back to 1878 when the New York publication capitalized on Thomas Edison’s reputation by announcing that he invented a machine that could transform soil into cereal and turn water into wine. Newspapers around the world ran with the story making this a particularly genius stunt.

Over 100 years later Taco Bell announced it had purchased the Liberty Bell, and would actually be renaming the iconic American symbol as the Taco Liberty Bell. The fast food chain had to recount the story quickly as groups rallied in anger.

Not to be outdone, Whole Foods got in on the Fool’s joke by announcing a new product “organic air”, which came in original, sea breeze, mountain wine, and salt and vinegar. We still want to sample the organic salt and vinegar air. It sounds so British.    Continue reading

Pyles Concept San Salvaje To Open April 28

pylesby Jennifer Thomas

In late 2013, the new owners at 2100 Ross Avenue told Pyles they would be closing Samar – a James Beard Award semi-finalist for Best New Restaurant in America – for extensive remodeling on the building. They offered to completely refresh Samar or finish out an entirely new concept.  Their announcement was on the heels of Pyles’ latest trek to Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru.  A lover of innovation, he was struck with the idea of San Salvaje, which is Spanish for Wild Saint, and “is a play on Latin America’s long history of blending pagan and catholic beliefs into a cohesive, beautiful dance,” said Pyles.

“I wanted to do a restaurant that represents all of Latin America because of my extensive travels in Mexico, Central and South America.  Mexico, Peru, Argentina and Brazil will be well represented on the menu, but it will also have influences from Cuba and the Caribbean.” Chef Pyles said only half-jokingly that the menu at San Salvaje “will incorporate everything south of Harlingen.”   Continue reading
