HG Sply Co Open For Lunch Daily

hg2by Steven Doyle

I recently did a First Look at HG Sply Company, and since then have been back many, many times. I have found myself in the unique Greenville Ave. restaurant not only for the food, but also the cocktails or beer. The restaurant itself is billed as a paleo restaurant, which is basically things hunted and gathered. But had you not known about that portion of the concept you might not give the menu a second thought, other than the fact it is sincerely well crafted food.    Continue reading

Hot in on our steam-powered press release machine come news of a new summer menu at Komali..

“Spicy food lovers hit a home run at Uptown’s Komali Restaurant.  Chef/Proprietor Abraham Salum and Executive Chef Anastasia Quinones have cooked up a hot dish for the Contemporary Mexican eatery’s summer dinner menu.  Costillas de Puerco (braised pork ribs) with pineapple habanero glaze, queso fresco mashed potatoes, and grilled nopal salad carries a “WARNING: very spicy.”              Continue reading

Bowlounge Open in Design District

bowlounge2Steven Doyle

A new bowling alley/ restaurant opened in the Design District. Bowlounge is located at 167 Turtle Creek Blvd, giving you an additional reason to frequent that burgeoning side of Dallas. The new business has been in the works for quite some time now, but has finally come to fruition. The restaurant portion of the bowling alley is not complete, so it is just bowling and booze for now.

Unlike counterparts popping up in Dallas, Bowlounge is considered a ‘retro blue collar’ hangout.  Continue reading

First Look: Mutts Canine Cantina

DSC08338by Steven Doyle

Mutts Canine Cantina opened its gates last night to literally hundreds dogs stationed throughout Uptown Dallas. The restaurant/dog park was taken by storm as humans made their way to the commissary for beer and hotdogs, while their canine counterparts enjoyed the view and yapped with their fellow dog pals.

This was a perfectly happy scene as both man and beast enjoyed fellowship and food, along with two sprawling acres maintained by employees who watched over the evening with careful alarm.   Continue reading

Is Zinfandel A First-Class Varietal?

Post destruction. The wines we tastedby Andrew Chalk

I first encountered Zinfandel as a student when I tasted Ridge Vineyards ‘California Coast Range’ Zinfandel for what was, for an impoverished graduate student, a king’s ransom of $6.99. It is no longer made, but that wine engaged me to hunt out Zinfandel:  a fruity, forward, red wines that offered a (usually) lower-priced alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. I did not know at the time that Zinfandel was an almost universally scorned blending grape that was the backbone of such headache-inducing abominations as Gallo Hearty Burgundy.  Continue reading
